Chapter 8 – Zeke

The rain had eased back to a steady falling mist when Zeke, in his wolf skin, made it home. He was sore, soaking wet, chest aching and guts cold with fear as he ran to the main lodge.

Hierarchy amongst the Pine Creek Lake wolves wasn't strict, and Zeke had spoken casually with Donovan, the pack’s alpha, more times than he could count. Bertrand, the pack omega, had listened to Zeke's fears without judgment, and Zeke trusted and loved them both. Still, knowing that he had to convince them to evacuate the settlement on his word was daunting. Especially showing up as he was, in wolf skin like a drowned cub at their door. Zeke was so lost in his own fears that he nearly jumped out of his fur when his little sister Amanda said in a loud whisper, "You’re in trouble.”

As a wolf, Zeke couldn’t argue even if he’d wanted to. And he didn’t want to shift until he absolutely had to do so. On the other hand, he needed to open the door.

“Did you see Silas? Is that why you ran off?"

Silas. For a moment he was confused. That wrenching sense of heartbreak at Silas claiming another seemed like something that had happened years and not hours ago.

Yes, Zeke and Silas had been close. But it was nothing compared to what Zeke had felt in Devon's arms. And even that paled in comparison to the job in front of him.

“You did, didn’t you?”

Amanda was wasting his time. He angled his muzzle to the door.

“No way. You want in, you’re gonna have to shift and open it yourself.”

It was embarrassing, but Amanda was right. Zeke took a breath and then let the shift wash over him.

"Right now! Ewww! I'm closing my eyes!"

"You need to wake up our parents. And everyone else. Another pack is going to attack us. They set up explosives. We have to get out."

Amanda had her back turned, and a sound like a choked giggle escaped her throat.

"I'm serious," Zeke said. "I'm going to talk to Don. Will you help?"

Amanda shifted, looking over her shoulder back at Zeke, squinting a little. "You mean it?"

"Yeah."

Amanda nodded, her round face serious. "Okay. I'll do it."

"They may have the camp surrounded. I almost didn't get through. This has to be quiet. Got it?"

Amanda nodded again, and dashed back toward their cabin. Zeke opened the door to the main lodge, which was never locked. The Pine Creek Lake den was so far away from human foot traffic and neighboring packs that there really wasn't any need to lock the doors. They hadn’t needed to be cautious. But things changed. Everything changed.

The main lodge was large, the first room was a large a common area with multiple, low sitting leather sofas. Pillows were scattered around the sofas. A TV was bolted to the wall above and to the right of the fireplace. In the afternoons, if the weather was bad, cubs and adolescents sprawled out in front of it, either watching the TV, wrestling, or playing games.
