I did not want to hide anything from him. I was ready to bare my soul, to confess nearly anything to him after all he had shared with me. His truth was out, laid completely exposed. We both needed something from each other, and we both were willing to risk everything to get it. Yet my truth was still not completely revealed, and I struggled with how to explain it.

Yes, I had admitted to being a Blooded One, a Time Walker like him, which was hardly something I could hide one I stumbled through time chasing after him. Despite revealing the origins of my bloodline as a descendant of the Falks, I had not been entirely truthful. I didn’t know if it was the warning from my elders which had been ingrained in me since birth, or if it was fear of how Nicholas might react. My father, my uncles, the others of our kind—well, we had more to conceal. What would Nicholas do if I told him the truth—that many of my kind were not only Blooded Ones, but Immortals? And to them, Nicholas was public enemy number one, a man I was sworn to betray?

When I impulsively cut my finger and traversed through time to find him, I never imagined exactly how much it would cost—or how much I would be willing to pay. I never imagined a day would come where I would be willing to betray my family, my duty, all I had been raised to believe, in order to protect a man I barely knew.

As I tilted my head slightly to study him, the truth settled heavy in my bones. Yes, I would help him. Be damned the cost. I would help him, even if he could not help me in return.

Despite our newfound truce, however, there remained a hesitant space between us. The rustic cottage was a sanctuary, bathed in the warm, flickering glow of firelight. The logs crackled, sparks intermittently flaring up only to fade away just as quickly, mirroring the simmering tension between Nicholas and me. The day had been cool and tolerable, but the evening bore a chill that slipped under the cottage door and coiled around our ankles.

“Feels like a storm’s coming up,” Nicholas murmured, draining the last of his drink.

I held a mug of spiced cider in my hand, the warmth seeping through my fingers. My gaze was pinned on Nicholas, unable to break away. His figure was illuminated by the fire’s glow, highlighting the stern lines of his face and the determined set of his jaw. There was an intensity to him that seemed to pull me in, like the ocean’s call to an eager sailor.

I opened my eyes, and suddenly, it hit me like a freight train. Deja vu, but not just any deja vu. This was like a tsunami of memories crashing over me, each one more vivid than the last. It felt like I had lived this moment a hundred times before, but it had never been more real, more unsettling.
