Chapter 20

Jet

I’d set an alarm before going to bed so I could call the security office at an early hour. After wracking my brain trying to figure out how to relay what I’d learned without getting my or Madison’s pay cheques cut off, I’d decided an anonymous tip was the way to go. I hoped I could also protect Rourke and the others for having spilled yet another serving of beans.

What I’d learned was far from definitive, but if I got someone with an ounce of sense on the phone, it was enough to get the official train moving.

The only part of yesterday that didn’t sit well on my conscience was leaving Gideon in the club’s parking lot. He’d helped me get people talking, and I couldn’t deny it had been nice to know I wasn’t alone if I ran into trouble. It had even been nice to work with someone who anticipated my next move and fell into step with me in a way that made the dance seamless. Eric was the only other person I’d worked with who came close to that level of collaboration, and even then, he always looked to me to lead. With Gideon, I worked with an equal, sharing the responsibility. It was a reminder of why my time in New York hadn’t been all bad. The least I could have done was give him a lift somewhere.

The truth was I’d been too worried he’d convince me to keep poking around where I wasn’t supposed to. The man was too persuasive for his own good.

But what did it matter in the end? He’d gotten what he’d come for and was no doubt heading home to make a full report. It meant SMOAC would need to rush through the usual bureaucracy and move in before the Americans took action and gave us away, but that would no longer be my problem.

Not officially, anyway. Now that my eyes were open, I wouldn’t be closing them again. O’Malley could try to crawl back under his rock or make use of the darkest shadows, but I would know where he was.

All my best laid plans went to shit, however, when I was woken up before my alarm by my ringing cellphone and the furious tones of my commander saying, “Dawson, you have thirty minutes to get your ass in my office and tell me what the fuck you’ve been doing.”

In an icy wave, my tentative optimism evaporated, and I lurched out of bed as though he’d barged into my bedroom.

“Colonel?”

What could he possibly know?

“We received a report last night that you were seen at The Afterlife asking questions. Is this true?”

A lot, it turned out.

“Colonel, I—”

“No, I don’t want to hear your excuses over the phone. I told you to take time off, and instead you’re running around the city playing Nancy Drew. I can’t believe you brought Sampson in on this with you.”

Confusion left me speechless until the answer clued in. Whoever had ratted me out had seen a man with me.
