Chapter Five

Jax’s stomach ached. He’d never laughed so hard in his life. Arabella howled again and beat against her chest before doing a cannonball into the pit. Her dress lifted behind her, making him think of a superhero in a cape. As she swam toward him, Jax couldn’t think of another time when he’d felt so content.

Happy.

Carefree.

Comfortable.

As she got closer, he reached out and pulled her to him, the balls parting like the Red Sea once had.

Arabella’s gaze landed on his. “Thank you for this. This has been the best date I’ve ever had.”

“You’re an easy catch then, considering this isn’t a real date, or at least not a proper one. But I’d do anything if it meant seeing this look on your face again.” His fingertips grazed her cheek bone.

“The gala was fun. It made me feel good to get up and speak. I hope no one was too upset about it. But this, jumping around in plastic ball pits that are bigger than a public swimming pool, was the most fucking fun I’ve had. Ever. You make me feel amazing things, Jax.”

“You’re welcome. I can bring you here anytime you’d like. And same, I can’t explain what I feel when I’m with you.” He winked. “Are you okay going back to the gala? The silent auction will be ending soon, and I’d like to bid on some things I saw in their brochure thingy.”

“I’m game for anything.” Her eyes grew wide and she added, “Well, everything but Veronica.”

“What’s up with your parents? Mine are just…” Jax struggled to find the right words to describe his mom and dad. Could he really call them parents? Jennings and Judy hadn’t really raised their children, but now they wanted all the glory of being those parents. The caring, doting, they-were-there-for-everything parents. Granted, they were building an empire that they were overly generous with to Jax and Justin. But for Jax, no amount of money could break the role of parenthood.

He would be there for his kids.

He would be the best father he possibly could, and nothing would stand in his way, including money. For Jax, there was no price he was willing to pay to have a crappy, fake relationship like he had with his parents.

“My dad is fine. He’s super laid back and almost non-existent. He doesn’t like these kinds of events my mother gets invited to, so he doesn’t come. He’s happy at home, in front of his cable television. My mother, on the other hand, is just a worrisome nag who doesn’t believe that I can be independent, reliable, yada yada yada.” She rolled her eyes.

Once they were out of the ball pit, Arabella helped Jax put his bowtie back on, along with his jacket. “Your mother has no idea what you’re all about. Clearly. I wouldn’t be surprised if tonight she figured out how independent and reliable you really are after your grandiose speech.”

“Not going to hold my breath. I look okay?” Arabella smoothed her hands down the front of her tight-fitting dress.
