Dearest One,

Of course, that was us. Not me specifically, mind you. You know of what I speak. You realize I can say no more.

Obviously, the plan did not reap the intended results. I didn’t think it would. But our high-ranking member listens to no one. The member is threatening hellfire and damnation to all involved. I’m doing what I can to calm him, but I fear he won’t be dissuaded. Keep vigilant. I’ll let you know more.

Your friend

Despite her determination to remain calm and pretend she was in a movie, Piper’s heart was hammering, and she was absently chewing on her thumb knuckle. So the cult was behind Jojo’s attack, or at least wanted Piper to think it was.

What she kept reading over and over was the line, I’m doing what I can to calm him, but I fear he won’t be dissuaded.

For the first time, the letter writer had used gender pronouns. Him. He.

This lent even more weight to the unshakeable feeling that Hayden was the “high-ranking member.” The sentence read like a slip-up on the part of the letter writer, who until now had been careful to use gender-neutral nouns.

But Piper couldn’t completely discount the idea that Jojo herself was behind the letters. She had as much to gain from getting Piper out of the running for the judge position as Hayden did. Since the hit-and-run, she had gained. She’d gained everything.

But if Jojo wasn’t behind the hate crime or the letters, she had to be warned about the latest letter. Piper doubted Jojo would do anything about it. Certainly, she wasn’t about to quit American Star. But Piper had to do her minimum duty as a friend and show it to her.

And if Jojo was behind the letters, Piper had to figure out what to do about that as well. Maybe she’d never be able to prove it, but she could, at the very least, never speak to Jojo again, the possibility of which she could barely contemplate.

Piper didn’t have many close friends. Her life of perpetual travel had consistently disrupted budding relationships. But despite their mutually packed schedules, Jojo had remained a constant. Hardly a week had gone by in the ten years since they’d roomed together on American Star when they weren’t in touch.

Jojo had been there with Piper through her mother’s illness and death, through her wrenching breakup with Marco, through her long, torturous slide from fame back to non-fame.

And five years ago, Jojo’s cherished, energetic little brother had been found dead from a heroin overdose in a hotel room. Piper could still conjure up the sound of her friend’s grief-laden wails. Piper had flown to New York and spent several nights sleeping at Jojo’s apartment, comforting her in a way that even Donny couldn’t. Men tended to want to fix things. Piper knew there was no fixing this, there was only being close.

She and Jojo had supported each other through their darkest times, and celebrated each other’s most high-flying victories.
