Chapter Nineteen
Clementine
Ward was at my door right at seven.
Before I answered, I checked my hair in the mirror. I wore a little make up but not much. I tried to make sure I looked nothing like my Fantasia alias. She and I were completely different people. Unfortunately, my date knew both women. Now I had to work harder to make us look as different as possible.
I walked to the door in my heels, which were fairly short compared to the ones I wore for work. My black dress was tight but it reached the area just above my knees, and I wore a gray blazer over it.
When I opened the door, I was caught by surprise. I knew Ward was handsome, but I forgot just how much. He had broad shoulders that looked intimidating in his black jacket. A gray t-shirt was underneath, and that showed the outline of his chest. His dark jeans hung low on his hips. The only indicator of his business life was the Rolex on his wrist.
âYou look lovely.â He leaned forward and quickly kissed me on the cheek in greeting.
Iâd never had a date kiss me on the cheek. Perhaps it was British thing. âThanks. You look nice too.â
âThank you. Are you ready?â
âYes.â I grabbed my clutch and shut the door behind me.
He kept his hands in his pockets and didnât touch me. âHow does Mediterranean food sound?â
âThat sounds delicious.â
We walked down to his car on the street. When we walked up to it, it unlocked on its own. Then he opened the passenger door for me and extended his hand to help me inside.
âYou know, you arenât like the other men I meet at the club.â
âThank you for the compliment.â He shut the door when I was inside.
His car had a leather interior and an impressive sound system. It was a manual. I thought it was impressive he drove a stick in the city.
He pulled up to the valet parking at the restaurant then stepped out. The valet opened my door but Ward took my hand and helped me out. Then he tipped the valet. âTake care of her.â
âYes, sir.â
Ward offered me his arm, letting me decide if I wanted to take it or not.
I did.
He walked me inside then approached the host. âWard for two.â
âHello, Mr. Lancaster. How are you?â
âIâm well.â
The host eyed me. âAnd you brought a beautiful date. Lovely.â
Ward flashed me a smile. âShe is.â
âRight this way, sir.â He guided us to a table by the window.
Like I expected, Ward pulled out the chair for me and waited for me to sit down. Then he scooted me in. I watched him as he walked back around the table, noticing his strong back and perfect posture.
This guy seemed too good to be true.
The waiter immediately approached our table, and Ward ordered a bottle of wine. Then we were left in private.
Ward eyed the menu. âHave you eaten here before?â
âWith my dad.â
He nodded. âMr. Thompson is your father? The director of the IT department?â
âYes.
