“Was that Marigold?” Chuck hissed.

Henry debated pretending he didn’t know who Chuck was talking about but decided not to poke the nervous groom.

“It was. I’d never met her before, she’s…”

“A crackpot? The biggest mistake I ever made? Wacko?”

“I was going to say interesting and kind. Although I can’t imagine the two of you together.”

Chuck leaned in so Henry was the only one who could hear his words. “Great sex.”

“Really, Chuck? That’s crass.”

Not that he expected anything more from Chuck, he was rude and crass.

He shrugged. “What can I say?”

“You can not say anything about sex with your son’s mother, ever.”

Chuck’s eyebrows drew together. “How did you get roped into talking to her anyway?”

Never, was the time to share that Henry and Ben had had a one-night stand in Maine. That it had been the best thing to happen to Henry in years. That he’d spent the past six weeks daydreaming about Chuck’s son and wishing he knew how to find him.

“Oh, you know. Proximity.”

The table did have seating cards propped up against each plate. Henry strolled around it and when he spotted Ben’s name at a seat three down from the bride, he exchanged it with Clark Wiser’s card. Clark could spend the dinner talking to Melissa’s vapid bridesmaid, Henry wanted Ben next to him. He’d buy Clark a bottle of his favorite scotch as an apology.

By the time Ben returned, everyone was seated except Melissa and Chuck. Melissa stood in a corner, not so quietly arguing with staff about the name mix-up. Henry felt guilty about it, but not enough to confess. Ben spotted his wave and strode over to take the seat next to him.

For the first time in weeks, Henry felt like he could breathe again.

Shaking his napkin out, Ben lay it across his lap. “Thanks for saving me a seat. I don’t know anyone. I only agreed to come because at least the food will be incredible.”

“Oh, yeah?”

Ben nodded. “The chef, Dany Petry, is pretty much fresh out of culinary school, but he’s talented and he’s got a great palate.”

“Wait,” Henry said. “Are you really studying to be a sommelier?”

“I want to. Dany and I worked together choosing the wines for tonight, so you’ll have to tell me what you think.”

“I’m a lawyer. What I know about wine is only to impress my lawyer friends.”

“Do you have many of those?”

“Friends, or lawyer friends?”

Ben cocked his head. “Friends.”

“A few. Not many. My closest friend lives here on the island.”

“Really?”

He knew Ben was about to ask who Henry’s friend on the island was when one of the catering staff leaned between them to set their dinners down.

“Oh, you got the salmon.” Ben waggled his eyebrows. “I ordered the tenderloin, we can trade bites. Dany’s been stressing about this dinner for days. Melissa was able to swoop in when another wedding party canceled, and she’s been a bit more hands-on than Dany appreciates.” Henry stared at him, fork halfway to his mouth. “What?”

Blinking and shaking his head, Henry replied, “Just surprised you’d be so bold.
