I manage to keep it together until Alex is out the door, his rolling suitcase in one hand, his carry-on on the other. I watch the sleek black town car he hired to pick him up and take him to the airport pull away from the house and then slam the door, throw the lock, and rush to the bathroom.

Mary stands behind me, one eyebrow raised, a knowing look on her face as I hurry past her down the hall.

That was close. What if it had been five minutes earlier, and Alex had seen that I was bleeding? There wasn’t any way he’d have gotten on that plane, no matter what I said to him or how hard I tried to push him.

And then everything I’ve been working for would have fallen apart in just two seconds as my lie came crashing down.

I finish up in the bathroom and wash my hands, walking to the kitchen to join Mary. She’s leaning on the counter, her arms crossed, a grin on her face. “You barely made it.”

I feel like she’s laughing at me and I study her face. It’s calm now, composed. “It’s a good thing I did. You would have gone down with me had he found out the truth.”

“You know we both want this too badly to let that happen.” She turns away from me, filling the electric kettle and fitting it on its base before flipping the switch and turning back to me. “What are you going to do now?”

Good question. I’m not sure. I love it when Alex travels because it means I get to stay up later than normal watching crap TV, eating ice cream out of the carton, and sleeping in. This time it’s different.

“I guess it depends on Anna,” I say. “When is she coming? When is she due?”

While Mary grabs two mugs and drops tea bags in them, I wipe my hands on my pants. I’m nervous, although I don’t know why. This was always the plan.

“Just over two weeks.” Mary finally turns and hands me my mug. It’s too hot to handle and I have to shift how I’m holding it and grab it by the handle so I don’t burn my hands. “You have a little more than two weeks and then you’ll have a baby. When she’s born I’ll go to the hospital and help the mother, then she’ll go home and I’ll bring the baby here.”

“Maybe I could go with you to the hospital,” I begin, but Mary shakes her head.

“No. She doesn’t want to meet you,” she says firmly, and even though I’m a little disappointed, I understand.

“Two weeks,” I repeat, trying the words out to see how they feel. “That means Anna will be older when Alex gets back. I thought the due date was closer to when he got home.” Suddenly I see a huge wrench that could be thrown right into our plans. It’s one thing to think that Alex wouldn’t notice that a newborn wasn’t his.
