CHAPTER 12
Hart Street, London
Office of the Order
Deciding to consult Mr Daventry before returning home to Portland Place, Olivia and Grayson arrived at the Orderâs townhouse and were shown into the plush drawing room.
The master of the Order sat in the wing chair, cradling a glass of brandy between his long fingers. Mr Sloane, an enquiry agent of exceptional skill, lounged on the sofa. His long hair hung loose, and he often reminded Olivia of a pirate or an explorer from the Elizabethan era.
Both men stood, though Mr Daventry studied them with keen eyes and said, âBack so soon? Did the earl not prove as welcoming as one hoped?â
âWe exhausted all lines of enquiry,â Olivia said, feeling like a child remiss in her studies. âBut we shall explain all if you can spare the time.â
Mr Daventry motioned to the vacant sofa. âIâm intrigued to learn what you discovered and have some news of my own to impart.â
Mr Sloane arched a curious brow while scanning Graysonâs shirtsleeves. âWhat happened to your coat?â
Grayson seemed reluctant to answer, and so she explained on his behalf. âWe were attacked on the road. The thug shot at the carriage and shattered the windowpane. Grayson had left his coat on the seat.â So he could worship her without restriction. âDespite numerous attempts, we have been unable to remove all the fragments of glass.â
Mr Daventryâs dark eyes widened. âThank the Lord you both survived. Where did this happen?â
âA few miles from Mersham Hall,â Grayson said.
The men waited for her to sit before settling into their seats.
âMr Bower believes Grayson may have been the intended target.â The thought sent a shiver racing down her spine. âThe man fired a single shot and, despite being on horseback, was extremely precise.â Had he taken aim a few minutes earlier, Grayson may not have survived.
Mr Sloane rubbed his chin thoughtfully. âSo, your coat was on the seat. The lead ball hit the window, shattering the glass, but you were unharmed. Are you certain it was gunfire and not a stray stone?â
âGrayson was not sitting on the seat,â she said, her cheeks turning suddenly hot at the memory of him sucking and licking her sex as if she were a delicious ice at Gunterâs.
A faint groan rumbled in Graysonâs throat. âI had been sitting in the seat but moved a few minutes before. Anyone who had seen us leaving Mersham Hall could have noted our positions.â
Doubtless they failed to predict Grayson would spend time on his knees, though she decided not to say so aloud.
âHow fortuitous,â Mr Daventry said, his intense gaze flitting curiously between them. âI shall speak to Bower and see if he can describe the assailant.â He paused. âIf you have exhausted all lines of enquiry, perhaps you should begin by telling me everything that occurred during your visit to Mersham Hall.â
Everything!
Should she mention she was a little obsessed with her husband? That their visit had been a journey of discovery in more ways than one? That every night she
