NINE YEARS AGO
It had been a Saturday night, around three in the morning when Merri had called me. At first, I could barely understand her, she was so upset and speaking so softly, like she didnât want anyone to overhear her.
âPlease, I need you, Katie. Come nowâ¦bathroom, door locked.â
I recognized only that she was in trouble and needed me. I came wide awake in an instant, even though I had only been in bed an hour or two having been at a party in town, a pre-celebration for grad. âIâm coming. Stay on the line, okay?â
âI canât.â The lifeline between us went dead in my hands, making me swear aloud.
I clamored out of bed and hurriedly dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt, not bothering with socks, but pushed my bare feet into my old sneakers.
Not wanting to wake my mother, who was not the deepest sleeper, I crept down the stairs, making sure to avoid the ones that creaked. I grabbed my bike from the garage and took off like a shot toward the small trailer on the edge of town where Sadie had been living with Wyatt the last few months. Since she and Wyatt had been together, I had been seeing less and less of my best friend Iâd been paired at the hip with since starting kindergarten. But she was expecting a baby girl, so maybe she just didnât have the same time for me. It hurt a lot. Couldnât say it didnât. But I sucked it up most days, knowing I was leaving town soon anyway for college. Growing up had been proving to be painful if you lost your best friend along the way. But sheâd called me when she needed help, no one else, so she still cared.
I was always considered the more level-headed of the two of us, everyone said so. Merri was made of gentler stuff, more refined, while I was never afraid of life, always tackling things head on. It had taken years to learn to control myself better. That night though, what loomed ahead, changed me, taught a life lesson I wouldnât wish on my worst enemy.
When the trailer came into view, I found it in complete darkness. Only the glow of the hydro light near the road lit up the end of the dirt driveway that led onto the property. Had the electricity gone off? I tried to remember the layout. The bathroom was next to the spare room, the one that Ashley was working hard to turn into the nursery. She was working as a cashier at the Co-op, saving every dime to pay for a second-hand crib and baby stuff. A shower was planned soon, before Josie was born, the name she planned to call her baby daughter.
I redialed her number, but it went straight to voice mail. No other choice, I had to get inside to see if Merri was okay. Deciding to go around back of the mobile home, I counted the windows to the bathroom, then stepped in closer only to realize it was above my head and I couldnât see inside.
