Chapter 21

“I have to tell you something pretty awful,” I say.

My dad and I are sitting at the kitchen table, eating breakfast. I didn’t sleep great, but I set my alarm to wake up to make sure I see him before he goes to work because I know I have to start laying some groundwork here. So we’re sitting at the table, eating bagels and drinking coffee.

“That’s an ominous way to start the day,” he says.

“I know,” I tell him. “There was a fire at work last night.”

He stops mid-bite. “Is everyone okay?”

I nod. “Yeah, everyone is fine. Jen got everyone out, and it really only did damage to the back end of the shop. The kitchen and stuff.”

“Oh, wow,” he says. “That’s rotten. I’m sorry.”

“She says her insurance will cover everything and it’ll be fine, but yeah. It sucks.” I pause and pick up my coffee. “So I’ll be off work for at least a few days, if not longer.”

He frowns. “Well, that’s a huge bummer, but totally understandable. She’s probably going to have to do a lot of paperwork and then line up contractors. And you can't exactly run a coffee shop if your kitchen isn’t functional.”

“Exactly.” I take a sip from my coffee. “So not sure what I’m going to do with my time off now.”

He chuckles. “I imagine you’ll figure out a way to spend it.”

“Well, yeah,” I say. “I’m just not sure how yet.”

He sets his coffee down. “Okay. I know where this is going.”

I pick up my bagel from my plate. “You do?”

“Uh huh,” he says. “You’re thinking that because I was a bit of a stickler about you getting a job while you’re taking time off from school that I’ll make you get another job while you wait for this one to come back. Right?”

I take a bite of my bagel and swallow. “Um. Yeah, I guess so.”

“Well, relax,” he says. “I’m not completely awful. You do not have to go out and find another job. Hopefully, the shop won’t be closed for that long. But until then, assuming it’s not forever, take some time off. Spend it with Trevor. Or just relax.” He winks at me. “You and I are good. You did what I asked. Not your fault the shop has to close.”

He’s making this easier than I thought and I’m so grateful. I’ve been really worried that I was going to have to battle him about finding more work, but he’s totally backing off. And I finally feel like I’m catching some sort of a break.

“Okay, cool,” I say. “And thanks. I don’t know what I’m going to do yet, but I just wanted to check with you.”

“I appreciate that, and I appreciate that you aren’t just taking it for granted,” he says, picking up his plate and taking it to the sink. “See? Communicating can be a good thing.”

“Yeah.”

“Any idea how the fire started?” he asks.

I pick up my coffee and bring it to my lips so he can’t see my expression.
