Well . . . there you are. There is the set-up the way I see it, an’ it looks to me as if there is only one thing—or two things maybe—to be done. An’ I reckon I’m gonna do ’em—good an’ quick.

I give myself another little drink just in case there are influenza germs lurkin’ in the undergrowth, after which I proceed to dress myself in a very nice grey pinhead suit with a blue silk shirt an’ collar an’ a navy barathea silk tie. I stick a brown fedora over one eye, take a quick look in the glass an’ register satisfaction. Maybe they told you that I am not a bad-lookin’ guy even if the old pan is a bit scratched. I stick a little bunch of violets that are in a vase on the mantelpiece in my buttonhole, an’ scram.

Outside in Jermyn Street I pick up a taxi. I tell the guy to drive me around to Mayfield Court out at Hampstead an’ I tell him to step on it.

I sit back in the cab an’ relax. I light myself a cigarette an’ do a little fancy smoke ring blowin’.

I have told you guys before that things always go in threes—an’ that goes for dames too. Well . . . we have had a coupla dames in this case—first of all the phoney Tamara who is a looker all right, an’ second the real Tamara who is somethin’ to make you blink—even if she is so goddam full of mayhem that she would make a really bad dame look like the local Sunday-school marm.

O.K. Well, now let’s see what this one is gonna be like.

An’ I hope she’s gonna be good . . . even if she don’t look it.
