That night, after I put the kids to bed, I text Gracie to see if sheâs up for a video chat. She replies right away.
Just home from work and about to shower. Can you give me fifteen mins? Iâll be quick. I donât want to keep you up too late, Coach.
She follows up the message with a little shower emoji and a winky face. I send her back a thumbs-up and then settle back into bed with a bottle of water as I scroll through some job listings, feeling a little lost and a lot frustrated.
If I leave teaching, I have no clue what else I would do. I must lose track of time because before I realize how long Iâve been scrolling, Gracie calls.
I pick up on the first ring.
âHey,â I say, letting the first real smile take over my face.
She immediately looks serious. âYou okay? You look tired or mad. Tell me what this is Iâm seeing.â She motions at the screen.
âYeah,â I chuckle. âAnnoying thoughts in my head. Iâm a lot better now, though. How are you? Iâm really sorry I canât meet you tomorrow.â
She lifts a brow at me and gives me that skeptical look I love so much. âYouâre deflecting,â she accuses. âNo deflecting. Whatâs going on?â
I sigh. âI feel like Iâve lost interest in teaching,â I admit. âItâs all Iâve been trained to do, but somehow, itâs different now. Itâs not like before.â
âBefore,â she says gently. âBefore you lost your wife?â
I donât want her to think this is all about Elizabeth because, really, itâs not. âSort of,â I explain. âBefore we had kids, mostly. Now, the idea of spending all day every day taking care of someone elseâs kidsâ¦even as a jobâ¦â I rub my face and groan. âI donât know. Iâm not making any sense. Iâm rambling.â
âYou do make sense,â she says. She adjusts her camera view, and I can see sheâs wearing a T-shirt with the sleeves cut off and the collar cut to be much wider. The thin fabric slips off her shoulders and past her collarbone. She must see where my eyes are because she points a finger at me. âHey, eyes up here, sexy.â
âBusted,â I say. âSorry. But in my defense, have you seen yourself?â
She grins and rolls her shoulders back, so her cleavage is even more pronounced.
âYou donât play fair.â
âHow about this?â she says. âYou talk for three whole minutes about whatâs going on, no deflecting, no excuses, and Iâll reward you.â
A wicked grin claims my lips. âWhatâs my reward?â My dick is already semi-hard just imagining what she wants to share.
âIt depends on how you do.â She lifts her brows and nods at me. âSo, talk. Timer starts now.â
I sigh but agree. If I ever want to face what Iâm really feeling, Iâve got to admit it to myself.
âWhen Elizabeth passed, she left behind some money,â I explain. âNot a lot. She had some life insurance from her job, and her parents had taken out a policy when she was a kid.
