VITO
Well, if Iâd thought Eden going to college was some kind of sign, Iâll be good goddamned if this isnât my sign to run like hell in the opposite direction.
âVito? Holy shit. Is that you?â Michelle, my ex-wife, glides up to us on heels so high, I canât help but think they are a step down from the stripper shoes she used to wear.
Iâm not being petty, though.
Iâm stunned and uncomfortable.
Of course, Iâd heard she was in town, but running into her here?
No fucking way.
Michelleâs brainâs got to be running a million miles an hour. She looks from Eden to Juniper to me, and then her whole demeanor softens. âWell, this is a surprise. Can I give you a hug?â
I open my arms and let her give me a hug, but I donât really return the gesture.
As soon as she releases me, she sticks her hand out toward Eden. âIâm Michelle Davis. Vito and I are, uh, old friends.â
Shit. This is going to get even weirder if I donât do something fast.
âBabe.â I turn to Eden. âThis is Michelle, my ex-wife.â
I watch as Eden woodenly shakes Michelleâs hand. âHi,â she says quietly.
âAnd is thisâ¦â Michelle gives Juniper a huge smile, and she bends down to look into the stroller. âOh my God, youâre adorable. Hi.â
Michelle waves at Junie, and I realize it must look like this is my family. But Iâm okay with that. Iâm not sure how to feel.
Uncomfortable is a fucking given.
But then I remember why Iâm here in the first place. I swallow back my feelings and motion toward the classroom door.
âWhat are you doing here?â I ask Michelle. âYou teaching?â
She smiles and looks genuinely happy. âI am,â she says. âI moved back to town to take care of my grandfather. You remember Granddad.â
I nod, and she continues.
âI opened my own business, and Iâm teaching here part time at night.â She looks from Vito to me. âWhat are you doing here?â
I step closer to Eden and put my hand on her lower back. âEden has a guest pass to sit in on your class.â I realize Iâm talking for her, and Iâm sure that is the last thing she wants. Although when I look at her, Eden still looks shocked speechless. âBabe?â I nod at her.
That seems to break Eden out of her trance. She smiles self-consciously and offers Michelle the sheet of paper that sheâs nearly crumpled into a ball. âI was hoping to sit in on your class tonight. Catherine from Admissions emailed about me.â
Michelle sets her briefcase on the floor and claps her hands. A couple more students have arrived, and they walk past us to get into the classroom. âHey there,â she says, greeting the students. âGo on in. Iâll be right there. Hi Lacey, are you prepared for your presentation?â
One of the two women she talks to looks older than we are. She slaps her thigh and laughs loudly. âMs. D, you know Iâm ready for my A.â
Michelle grins. âIâm happy to hear it.
