Chapter Twenty-Three
So they were taking her. Not just talking to her. Dixie had wondered if that would happen. It meant they were serious.
She waited. She waited for the two men to separate. One came out of the building and strode quickly round the corner towards the parked car.
She'd seen enough. She jumped off the parapet and abseiled down the front of the guest house. When she reached the pavement she pulled the thin rope down after her and stuffed it into the daypack she carried. Then she stepped into the shadow of an adjacent doorway.
The car arrived on sidelights only, engine quietly humming. As the driver was getting out, Dixie stepped close and jammed her gun into his ear. He froze, one foot on the pavement, the other still inside the car. One hand holding on to the door handle, the other gripping the steering wheel.
'Be still!' she snapped.
He didn't move.
Working quickly, she showed she could do things by the book as well as they could. She plasti-cuffed one hand to the steering wheel and the other to a grab handle set above the door. Then she pulled a black hood over his head.
'See how you like it!' she snapped grimly.
'You're making a big mistake.'
'Yeah? We'll see about that.'
Then she pulled up the hood and stuck a strip of tape across his mouth to complete the job, the same as they'd done to Anna.
'You're lucky I don't just shoot you now, you sonovabitch!' she told him. 'Get it over with.'
She turned away then and stepped back into the doorway to wait. She didn't have to wait long. Seconds only. She heard the front door of the guest house open. Shadows appeared on the pavement. She moved fast.
He was good. He sensed her. Even before he saw his partner's predicament, he sensed Dixie coming and swung round, gun arm rising.
Dixie fired first. Two sharp cracks. Body shots that crumpled him in a heap. She kicked the gun out of his hand as he went down. Then she crouched and checked for a pulse in his neck. He muttered a few words that surprised her. Then he stopped. Immediate danger over. He wouldn't be getting up again.
She looked round. Anna was frozen to the spot.
'It's OK,' Dixie said, getting back to her feet. 'Don't worry, Anna. The cavalry's here.'
She reached up and pulled the hood off Anna's head. Then she brought out a serious knife and cut through the plastic tie on Anna's wrists with a deft stroke.
She began to ease the tape from Anna's mouth, but thought better of it. 'You do it,' she said, leaving go and stepping back.
It was too dark to read the other woman's expression but Dixie sensed she was in shock. 'It's OK, Anna,' she said again. 'I'm a friend. Come on now. Quick! Let's go.'
She grabbed her by the arm and began to hustle her away.

'Who the hell are you?' Anna asked belligerently when they were round the corner and heading through the churchyard. She was recovering fast.
