The next few days were very dull without Ian around. The crueller girls, which was most of the girls at Highcrest, had taken to sniggering at Friday wherever she went. They said Ian only ran off because she kissed him.
Friday missed Melanie too. Admittedly they did share a tent, eat all meals together, have detention together and spend all their free time with each other. But in class, Friday only had Binky and a bunch of year 12 students she still had trouble telling apart. The girls were all blonde and mean. They didnât seem to have any other distinguishing features. As for the boys, they mainly communicated through grunting, which wasnât very intellectually stimulating.
The police had been unable to locate Ian. But just as they were about to launch a full-scale search, Ian had called his mother and told her he was on his way to visit his father in the Cayman Islands, so the search was called off.
Friday and Melanie discussed the situation over breakfast.
âIf the Cayman Islands are really as beautiful as they appear to be in all the holiday brochures, then I doubt weâll see Ian again,â said Friday sadly, as she poured maple syrup from a huge jug onto her waffles.
âI donât think so,â said Melanie. âIan is blond. Heâll burn easily and putting on sunscreen is such a chore. Iâm sure heâll be back. A tropical paradise may be warm, but it would never be as exciting as Highcrest.â
After eating, Friday said goodbye to her best friend then headed off with Binky towards the school car park. The year 12 geography class was going on a field trip. None of the students were looking forward to it because the field trip was to observe erosion. Friday suspected that Mr Maclean had concocted such a tedious excursion as a passive aggressive way of punishing his class. The year 12 students were much more rude and dismissive of him than the year 8 students had been, and they had been bad enough.
The class was a small one. Only twenty students chose to do geography in year 12, so they were taking the school minibus. Mr Maclean would be driving the vehicle himself, which Friday anticipated would be more educational than the actual field trip. If Mr Maclean was as bad at driving as he was at teaching, they were sure to have an exciting journey.
When they arrived at the car park, however, Friday and Binky were surprised to discover their classmates milling around. They had evidently been there for some time because a few of the boys were playing handball and Isabella Smythe was sitting down, engrossed in a book. Meanwhile, Mr Maclean was yelling at Mr Pisano.
âThis is unacceptable,â snapped Mr Maclean. âI have the minibus booked from nine till twelve. Itâs on the schedule. I put in my request six weeks ago.â
Mr Pisano was doing a remarkably good job of not yelling back at Mr Maclean. âI donât want my truck to be stuck here either,â he said calmly.
