After Lyons left, Major Stovall who had been sitting there quietly all this time got up and walked over to the only window in his office. After standing there looking up the street at the massive hospital complex for several minutes, he slowly turned to Jeff and said, “What else?”

“What do you mean?”

“What happens now?”

“We will do everything in our power to find Gisela and get her out of East Germany.”

“I was talking about Sergeant Lyons. What happens to him now?”

“I don’t know. I don’t plan to bring any charges against him. Yes, I know what he did was potentially treasonous, but none of that stuff he gave them was of any importance to anyone. I can’t justify what he did, but I also can’t say that I wouldn’t have done the same thing if I had been in his shoes. Besides, what he did didn’t hurt anyone. I guess it’s in the hands of the army what will happen to him now. Personally I hope nothing happens until we bring Gisela out of East Germany and reunite them.”

“I’ll see to it the army turns its back on what has happened here,” Stovall said. “Do you need any help rounding up George, or whatever his name is?”

“No, I think the agency can take care of that. We will watch him for a while to see if anyone else is involved.”

“What about here?” Stovall asked.

“What do you mean?”

“Do you think anyone else here was or is involved in any of this?”

What an odd question Jeff thought. How much does he really know?

Gardelegen is a town in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany on the main rail line about half way between Berlin and Hanover. It was first founded in the tenth century and has been almost totally destroyed several times. First by the French during the thirty years war and the last time by the allies during WW II. It is said to produce some of the best beer in the Russian Zone of East Germany. By the start of WW II Gardelegen had become a highly industrialized town producing agricultural machinery. All these factories were converted to the production of aircraft and trucks for the Third Reich. Gisela’s Dad, Henrich Krupa had been a machinists in one of these factories. Had it not been for that he would have been conscripted for the army like Gisela’s two brothers were. She never saw them again.
