Chapter fourteen

Nestor

Friday, 21st April 2017. Belfast.

Nestor arrived at Lynch Industries just after seven in the morning. Getting out of the taxi, he stepped out into a drizzle, causing him to pull his jacket tighter. Nestor was grateful that Ethel had thrown it round his shoulders before he left, even if it did seem oversized. Waving at the security guards, he walked towards the management office through the gate. According to the tracking information from the Artemis and Apollo drones, Frederick didn’t usually arrive in the office until eight-thirty. He checked his tablet. There was no sign of him.

As he entered the office, his heart was pounding. He checked for cameras. What he was about to do was an escalation of his investigation. It was a crime. He opened the door and checked again for cameras as discreetly as possible. Frederick’s computer was in front of him, and it held access to his emails. Nobody could access it without the correct username and password. Nobody except for me. He grinned, fuelled by a combination of nervous energy and sweaty excitement. Pulling his lunch box out of his briefcase, he unwrapped the greaseproof paper and string round his sandwiches. Nestled within was a hardware keylogger in a plastic bag. Holding it up triumphantly, he inserted it into Frederick’s PC.

Nestor adjusted his jacket, held his head up high and went to stride out of the office. What if I’ve been seen? He paused. I need an excuse. Grabbing a pen from Frederick’s desk, he looked round for a notepad or some post-it notes. Opening the desk drawer, he blinked. A post-it note stared him in the face with Fredericks username and password. He shook his head. Nobody could be that stupid…right?

He quietly typed in the username and password and watched incredulously as the computer unlocked. Loading up Outlook, he exported the data file and copied it onto a USB stick. Then sat watching it churn as he copied across the contents of ‘My Documents.’ Nestor did a quick search but couldn’t see any other folders of interest. He sat watching the progress bar slowly moving.

A beep came from his tablet. Frederick had arrived early. Nestor had spent twenty minutes downloading files from his computer and it was time to go. He scribbled a note for Frederick and stuck it to his monitor.

“Contract signed. Expect a copy later today.”

He was out of the management office and across the yard as Frederick parked. Nestor walked with a jaunty stride. Mission accomplished.

As he passed Frederick, he gave him a thumbs-up, which received a courteous nod in return. You idiot, he thought as he gave him his best smile.

His eyes suddenly widened. The key logger was still in Frederick’s PC. I’m an idiot! Nestor shook his head with frustration. He’d have to work late tonight to go and collect it when Frederick had left.

He cleared his mind of Frederick as he approached Skunkworks. Time for the next part of his plan. Reduce the level of micromanagement in the department to give him more time to focus on The Nautical Gentlemen.
