Chapter four

Chad

When Destiny finally told me about the HR issue we were facing at work, I was stunned. I loved working as a border patrol officer and making busts, and I couldn’t believe that Scott was trying to pervert my work because of the jealous lens he was looking through.

I’m not sure I could fully blame him because Destiny’s body would drive any man crazy, even under the border patrol uniform. Those hips and breasts were undeniable. I knew that firsthand.

We were at my place, and I had cooked her dinner for a change. I served an herb-crusted rack of lamb on a bed of fettuccine alfredo and a side of asparagus roasted with lemon and olives.

“I’m honestly impressed,” Destiny said.

“I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“You should. I know you are great at finding excellent restaurants, but I had no idea you knew how to cook this well. If I did, we would have been at your place a lot more,” she laughed.

“I’m glad you like what you see. I hope you like the taste, too. Lamb is one of my favorite things to cook.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, my mom always makes it for me on my birthday. And it always makes me feel like I’m at home.”

“That’s a sweet set of memories.”

“Yeah, I love my mom. She’s great. I want to introduce the two of you soon.”

She blushed and hung her head down. It was a rare moment of vulnerability for her. I loved that I could pull these reactions out of her.

“That’s really sweet, Chad. I’m not sure what to say. The last time I met someone’s mom, I ended up walking down the aisle, and then I woke up six years later with a broken heart.”

“I can’t say I fully understand because I’ve never been married, but I like the way your story started. I’d love it if we could make our way to the aisle.”

“Chad, what are you saying?”

“I’m saying that I love you, Destiny. I really want to build a life with you.”

She was silent, and I wasn’t sure what that meant.

Finally, she replied. “A life with you sounds sweet, but honestly, this all still feels so surreal. I think we should take our time and not put too much pressure on it.”

“Ever the pragmatist.”

“One of us has to be.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” I was feeling rejected, and my words came out more harshly than I intended.

“It means that we are great in bed, and we go on great dates, but the truth is we are still getting to know one another. And I want to take my time doing that. I want to know who Chad Sanders is beyond the amazing body. Can you really be there for me no matter what?”

“Of course, I can. Why would that even be a question?”

“Because we have to face the first real challenge of our relationship.”

“What
