Chapter 8

Finley

Istretch languorously, a grin forming on my lips as memories of last night rush into my mind.

Waking up in Jake’s bed after the incredible night we shared feels surreal. Part of me wants to pinch myself to make sure this isn't a dream.

But the delightful soreness in my muscles and the heat that spreads across my cheeks at the memories assure me it's wonderfully real.

The sheets are rumpled, and the pillow beside me still bears the imprint of his head.

I roll onto my side and hug his pillow, grinning like a schoolgirl with a crush. I breathe in deeply, savoring his lingering musk.

Last night was incredible. The way Jake touched me, how he looked at me with those smoldering blue eyes, and how our bodies moved together in perfect sync was beyond anything I could have imagined.

As I bask in the afterglow, a flicker of doubt creeps in. We discussed his relationship with his ex-wife Natalie, and their divorce is pending.

Jake assures me he’s moving on with his life, but part of me wonders if he's truly ready.

I’m giddy and a little nervous, wondering what this means for us.

Are we moving too fast?

Part of me wants to pump the brakes to protect my heart from another potential heartbreak.

I never expected to feel this way, to be ready and willing to open my heart to love. But with Jake, it feels right. It feels natural, like coming home.

My bigger, more adventurous part is ready to trust our connection and take a leap of faith.

I slip out of bed and pad barefoot across the hardwood floor, pulling on Jake's discarded shirt from the night before.

It falls to my thighs, the soft fabric whispering against my skin.

I splash water on my face and finger-comb my messy hair in the ensuite, trying to tame the unruly mop.

Following my nose, I go down the hallway toward the kitchen, a spring in my step and a flutter in my heart.

Jake stands at the stove, spatula in hand, whistling as he flips pancakes. I prop myself against the doorframe, feasting on the sight.

He's shirtless, wearing only low-slung sweatpants. I pause to admire the muscles flexing across his broad shoulders and down his powerful back.

He glances over his shoulder and catches me staring. A slow, heated smile spreads across his handsome face.

“Good morning, beautiful,” he says, his deep voice still gravelly from sleep. “I hope you're hungry.”

I cross to him, sliding my arms around his waist.

“Starving,” I murmur into his broad back.

He turns in my arms, pulling me close. His lips find mine in a searing kiss that steals my breath. When we break apart, I'm flushed and breathless.

“Easy there, or we'll burn breakfast,” Jake teases, his eyes dancing playfully.

He gives me one more quick peck before returning to the sizzling pancakes.

Jake flips pancakes with practiced ease. The snap and pop of batter hitting the hot skillet fills the cozy kitchen. I hop up to sit on the counter, snacking on blueberries from the bowl beside me.

Sunlight streams through the window.
