THE CAT IN THE BAG

I am sitting on a park bench minding my own business, which at the moment consists of the study of some passing statistics like 5′6″, 120 pounds, 34-26-34, when this little bimbo in the grey fedora and pencil mustache sits down next to me, hems and haws a bit, then says, “Are you by any chance Kit the Cat Burglar?”

I perform a sitting high jump of eighteen and a quarter inches—a new intramural record.

True, on the date of this park bench episode, I am still in the burgling business. Nowadays, of course, I am plain Augie Augenblick, having paid my debt to society—at least as much of it as they could tag me with—but even at the time whereof I speak I am not anxious to have my business advertised in the public parks. So I murmur, “Excuse me!” and prepare to leave a large void in the immediate area.

Grey Fedora hauls me back by the jacket sleeve. “Because if you are,” he goes on, “I have a five-grand proposition for you.”

The words “five grand” induce a certain immobility, and though I am prompt with many disclaimers, in case he is concealing a tape recorder and police badge about his person, I express curiosity to hear what this proposition may be, supposing (ho! ho!) that I am this Kit what’s-his-name.

“I want you to steal a cat,” says Grey Fedora.

“You have a very perverted idea of what cat burglars do,” I say, frowning. “Excuse me again.”

Again he hauls me back, and this time he presses a business card into my hand. It is so heavily embossed as to be readable in Braille, and says:
