The lights were already out on the second floor of the main school building, which was where the guest reception had been. They were still on in the office to the left coming in from the entrance, but only a little of that light reached the entrance area itself.
The rest of the light came from the little window to the reception room; thanks to that, I was able to see the woman leaning against the glass. I didnât have to see her face to know who it was. It was Haruno Yukinoshita.
She seemed to be killing time, her eyes on her phone. Its backlight shone over her beautiful and well-proportioned features. But her expression was the picture of boredom, and she came off colder than usual.
She must have heard my footsteps, because she glanced up at me. Her head was tilted down and the streetlight outside was shining behind her, so I couldnât really see her expression, but it seemed like she giggled.
When she took a step away from the glass, I could finally see her face clearly. With an icy gaze and a small, dark smile, she said teasingly, ââ¦I knew youâd run away out here.â
My eyebrows twitched in reaction, and I just about clicked my tongue. Haruno smiled as if my scowl amused her.
I really couldnât stand this woman. She saw right through me, to my intentions and everything in my heart. So I put up some minimal resistance by saying spitefully back at her, âYouâre the one who said that stuff to make me come here.â
Haruno didnât deny or demur. She just shrugged. As sheâd left the meeting room, sheâd told me where she was going while giving me a meaningful look. Any moron would have picked up on what she wanted.
I could have pretended not to notice and just gone straight home, but if Iâd done that, I would have gotten either a phone call or some form of contact through Hayama or Komachi. Haruno had, in fact, gotten a hold of me like that before. It was less of a hassle to go to her.
In the end, I couldnât ignore her.
The way she talked like she saw through me, her terrifying voice that seemed to stab into my throat, the glint in her eyes like an ice-cold knife, the beautiful profile that so much resembled her sisterâs, her mask that played the adult and acted cheerful, the innocence she would unexpectedly reveal, and her tragically gentle smiles all bothered me way too much.
She could probably tell I was thinking that, too.
I knew she was leading me around by the nose, and yet I had to ask. âWhy do you say stuff like that? What are you trying to do, ultimately?â I was irritated. Iâd been holding on to this question all this time in my gut.
What Haruno Yukinoshita said and did had always caused ripples in my heartâin our hearts, actually. Even now, when we were trying to end things peacefully, she was tossing in rocks in an attempt to spread more ripples.
