Chapter 8

The next day passed without much incident. Cash had texted me to ask if I wanted to go hunting with him in the evening. I knew he was still on the hook for me, and I couldn’t keep stringing him along when Jake interested me more. I planned to do it soon, but it kept slipping my mind.

I had a lot of stuff to think about. The thing at the top of my mind, though, was my dad’s insistence that I figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Jake was such a hard worker that I felt almost ashamed of how lazy I was in comparison.

So on a whim, I looked up admission requirements to MSU and was surprised to see that I did have the grades to get in. Barely.

Maybe there was hope for me after all. I got my old algebra notebook out of my desk and filled two pages with information I gleaned from MSU’s website. I wrote down programs I might be interested in. I noted that I’d have to write an essay. By the time I was done, it was way past lunchtime, and I was way hungry.

I have a date with Jake. I might go to college after all, I chanted in my head. I was in a good mood, and I practically pranced down the stairs.

Then, I nearly ran head-first into Janet.

My smile fell off of my face. “Oh. Sorry.”

“It’s okay, hon.” Her face twitched. She looked like she was about to say something, but thought better of it.

It was strange, but I ignored it. I turned the corner, heading for the kitchen, when I heard voices speaking in hushed tones. I paused just outside the door and listened in.

“—tonight.” It was Mark’s gruff voice.

“Why?” Ezra responded.

I scrunched up my face. What was up with those two? Sneaking around, whispering in secluded corners. This was the second time I’d nearly walked in on them having a deep, secret conversation. Then, I remembered what Jake had told me about last night. He and Ezra were shifters, and it was their most guarded secret.

Does Mark know about them? I wondered. Then, an even greater revelation hit me. Is Mark a shifter, too?

But Mark and Ezra weren’t alone.

“Because now, we know who they are.” That was Tucker Bell, and next, I heard Jake.

“And it’s our duty to stop them before they go too far?”

I couldn’t take it anymore. I burst through the door. “Before who goes too far?” I asked.

All the men in the kitchen jumped. I was just as surprised as they were, because there were more than just Mark, Ezra, Tucker, and Jake.

The kitchen was filled with eight of my dad’s ranch hands. I scanned their stunned faces.

“What’s going on?” I asked warily.

Mark was the first to break the silence. He squinted at me from under his bushy gray eyebrows. “Nothing that concerns you, Kyra. Go along, now.”

“Is it about the wolves? The ones that have been trespassing at night?” My eyes went to Jake, who was working hard to avoid my gaze.
