I turn down Beaumont Avenue, my wipers moving back and forth in rhythm as I pull into the parking lot of the storage facility. I retrieve my phone and text the sitter, a knot of guilt forming in my stomach about leaving Madison with Whitney while I go to spy on her mother. Am I so different from Lizzy? Is what I'm doing any better than what she did when she spied on Alison?
I force the thought from my head when I get a reply from Whitney that everything is great. This isn't the same. I'm not doing this from a place of jealousy or just for myself.
Escaping the rain as quickly as possible, I dart through the facility door on my right and start searching the numbers over the locker doors. I go down one hall and turn in another direction, winding through the building until I finally find it. I stand in front of the gate to the storage locker, gripping the key tightly in my hand.
Once I open it, there is no going back. It's just like the letter in Evelyn's office from her father. I resisted opening it because I knew it would be an invasion of privacy, but maybe I should have opened it. Who lies about their father being dead? Even worse, why would someone make up a story about being abused? Evelyn is lying to me, and I need to know what other secrets she's keeping from me.
I slip the key into the lock. I have to do this. I need to put my suspicions to rest. I'll go in, see there is nothing out of the ordinary, then put all this doubt behind me and focus on being the husband Evelyn deserves.
Sliding the gate up, I pull on the cord to the overhead light and step inside. I look around to find dozens of boxes. Some are open, and some are sealed shut. I glance at the sides of the boxes for any writing, but none are labeled. In the back-right corner, I recognize some small furniture items from Evelyn's apartment while we were dating. I rummage through the first open box on my left and find an old alarm clock and some medical journals.
I immediately feel ridiculous. I paid a babysitter to watch our daughter so I could come and sort through all my wife's junk. Relief settles over me as all I see is item after item of everyday household goods in each container. This is it. This is the verification I need that, while Evelyn might have some secrets, she isn't the monster Lizzy wants me to see her as. She isn't hiding anything in this locker. I can lock the gate, put the key back, and go on with my life.
I turn to leave, and as I do, my leg catches on one of the boxes. I freeze, careful not to disturb anything. Just as the box is about to tip over the rest of the way, I lunge for it, catching it just in time to stop the contents from spilling out.
