Chapter Forty-One

Kara awakened to find Abram already awake as the sun began to rise.

“I’ve been so tired lately. I’d love to sleep until noon,” she said more to herself than to Abram.

He didn’t answer. There was a bitter taste in his mouth. And he felt like he didn’t even deserve to hold her hand.

Neither Abram nor Kara spoke very much as she got dressed and ready to leave. He hung his head and stared at the ground. But when he did look up, he saw that she could hardly look at him. Then once she was ready to go, she turned and asked, “Are you sure you want to come with me? I could go alone, and then come back tomorrow night and tell you how much money we will need.”

He shook his head. “No, I won’t let you go alone. I will be there at your side. I can’t do much for you. But I will do what I can.”

“All right,” she said. The sun had already begun to rise as she climbed out the window. He watched her as she walked toward the street and he chastised himself for how little he was able to provide for this woman he’d come to love. He couldn’t marry her. He couldn’t protect her or his unborn child. He couldn’t even walk her home in the dark. Not only this, but if they were to have a child, his blood would be the blood that tainted their little one for the rest of its life. Abram began to hate himself. And although he’d never been religious before, and his Jewish background had never mattered to him one way or the other, as he watched the back of Kara’s gray coat disappear around the corner, Abram began to hate being a Jew.
