“No, no, no, no, no,” Rainbow Dash said under her breath. She couldn’t believe what was happening. Fluttershy was right by the goal, and Sunset Shimmer was standing with the ball, right within reach. The Blitzball couldn’t have been more than six inches from her hand, but Fluttershy still didn’t reach out and grab it.

Sunset Shimmer sprinted past and threw the Blitzball into the net. Pinkie Pie and Rarity, who were both on her team, raised their arms in the air and cheered.

“Why won’t she just steal the ball from her?” Rainbow Dash said out loud. “I don’t understand why it’s so hard. It was right there.”

It was Monday afternoon, and Vice Principal Luna was back at practice. She stood next to Rainbow Dash on the edge of the field as the two teams faced off against each other. They watched as Fluttershy apologized to her teammates, Applejack and Twilight Sparkle.

“Just show her again,” Vice Principal Luna said. “See if you can get her to take it from you. There’s nothing to be scared of—it’s part of the game.”

Rainbow Dash trotted out onto the field. She tried to seem as if she weren’t annoyed, but three whole practices had passed since she showed her team the new plays and they hadn’t mastered them the way she’d wanted them to. On Monday they’d go up against the boys’ team, and they still weren’t ready. They barely had any time left to practice.

Fluttershy held up her hands as soon as she saw Rainbow Dash. She looked as if she might cry. “I’m sorry. I was going to grab it, I was, but then she got away from me.…”

“You don’t have to say sorry,” Rainbow Dash said. “Let’s just try it again. There’s not even a second to hesitate in Blitzball. You just have to go for it.”

Rainbow Dash grabbed a ball off the ground and dribbled it past Fluttershy. “See, I’m right within reach. Just swipe it. How about the ‘crab claw’ move we showed you?”

Fluttershy looked nervous. She ducked down, then grabbed the ball with one hand and locked her other arm around it. But when it was time for her to yank it away from Rainbow Dash, she couldn’t do it.

“What’s wrong?” Rainbow Dash asked. “Just pull it away.”

“I don’t know.…” Fluttershy let go of the ball. “It just seems kind of… mean.”

“It’s the game!” Applejack called from across the field. “It’s what we have to do to win!”

It was obvious Fluttershy couldn’t do it, though. Instead of wasting time, Rainbow Dash moved to the next play they’d been practicing over and over again.

“How about the ‘colossus’?” she said. “Let’s run it a few times.”

They’d run it a dozen times, but they still hadn’t gotten it to work. Rainbow Dash was trying to stay positive, but it seemed as if something always went wrong. Twilight Sparkle’s glasses slipped off and fell, or Pinkie Pie was goofing around and missed her cue. Rainbow Dash was hoping this time would be different. It really needed to be different.
