FOURTEEN

Aiden

I fumble with the buttons of my dress shirt, my hands still trembling from the incredible passionate interlude we just shared.

My God—what is this woman doing to me?

I’m not the kind of man who loses his cool, especially not around people, much less those of the female persuasion. Yet, here she has me grinning like an idiot and just because she finally agreed to sleep with me. And it was better than I dreamed it could be, if that’s even possible.

Who knew a boring old changing room could become the setting for such an unforgettable moment? As I somehow manage to get myself dressed, take some deep breaths, and struggle to bring some semblance of order back to my disheveled appearance, I steal a glance at Brooke.

“Smooth move, Romeo,” she teases, unable to hide her amusement as she watches me try in vain to adjust my tie back to normal. What’s wrong with me tonight? One night with this temptress has erased decades of fine motor skills. “Here, let me handle it.”

I chuckle, watching her as those slender fingers skillfully straighten my tie. Her brow furrows as she caresses the fabric and asks, “Heavens, how much did this cost?”

“The entire suit or just the tie?”

She gives me a stormy look that seems too similar to the one you get when you’ve messed up after waking up next to a one-night stand you shouldn’t have indulged in.

“Forget it, I don’t want to know.”

I grab her hand and give it a comforting squeeze. “Brooke, you don’t have to worry about any of that.”

She purses those full, pink lips of hers and, much to my dismay, Brooke slips her hand away from mine before she rests it on her chest in a protective gesture. That can’t be good.

“I’m serious,” I continue, trying to hold onto the connection we experienced out there on the dance floor and here in the changing room. “I like fancy things, true, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate—”

“What?” she interrupts, and it seems I didn’t pick the right words after all. “The simpler things in life? The little moments wealthy guys usually take for granted? Or it doesn’t mean you don’t appreciate this small town you escaped from the instant you went to college? Because I honestly don’t see you spending time in this boring, quaint town after Sam and Hannah leave for their honeymoon.”

“I have someone to return for now,” I protest, but she doesn’t look convinced.

“You’ll grow bored in five minutes.”

“Brooke, that’s not fair.”

“It might not be fair, but it’s true. I’m just a small-town baker, and you bought your own private island. Come on, who are we trying to fool? This has no chance of working.”

“You didn’t think that five minutes ago.”

I try to wrap my arms around her once more, pull her close, and kiss her worries and doubts away, but this time, she slips away from my reach. The space between us seems just as vast as the distance between this room and the sun.
