CHAPTER ELEVEN
Dinner was delayed for a bit while my mother washed Sweetie Pie Dough off in the bathroom sink upstairs. She dried him with her hair dryer and finally sat down at the table with him in her lap. His fur was so fluffed up from the bath that you couldnât see his face anymoreâexcept for when he bared his teeth, which he did every time Jerry opened his mouth to speak.
âWell, Lana, this is a very interesting-looking dish youâve made tonight,â my mother said, looking at the mackerel on the platter. âWhat do you call it?â
âRaw fish,â I said.
âSushi,â corrected Lana.
âSushi?â said Jerry, his voice filled with dread.
âYou love sushi, donât you, Dad? You told me that once. Remember?â
âUm, really? I donât know why I would haveâuh, did I?â he stammered.
âIâve never seen sushi served quite like this, Lana. Did your mother give you this recipe?â my mother said.
âNo. This is my own personal recipe,â Lana said.
âAre you sure itâs safe?â my mother asked gently.
âNow, Lorraine, I donât think Lana would serve anything that wasnât safe to eat, would you, honey?â said Jerry.
âOf course not, Daddy. How could she even think that?â Lana said, giving my mother a hurt look. âAnd why was she asking if it was Momâs recipe? Was that supposed to be a diss? âCause Mom is a very good cook.â
âYes, honey, she was, I mean, is,â said Jerry uncomfortably.
âI didnât mean to offend anybody,â my mother said quietly. âIâm sure your mother is a fine cook, Lana. Iâve just never seen sushi that looks back at you, is all.â
âItâs fresh, if thatâs what youâre worried about, Mom,â I said. âI got it myself at the fish market this morning. Brought it home on my bike, under my arm.â
âI know, Guysie. I washed your jacket this afternoon. Twice.â
âSo would you like a piece, Lorraine?â Lana said. âItâs mackerel. Supposed to be one of the fishiest fish around.â
âThatâs quite a claim to fame,â my mother said.
She swallowed hard and held her plate out to Lana. Lana took the knife and hacked off a piece of fish that included the head, eyeballs and all.
âThere you go,â she said. âYou know, Guy and I were talking, and we think that we should make dinner together all the time after you guys get married. We could have sushi twice a week. Right, Guy?â
I nodded.
âHow about you, Daddy? Want some?â Lana asked sweetly.
âActually, I had a late lunch at the hospital, honey,â Jerry said.
âWell, maybe youâd just like some of Guyâs special marshmallow salad then,â Lana said, handing him the bowl of oily marshmallows.
âIâve never seen you make that salad before, Guy,â my mother said, looking into the bowl.
I shrugged my shoulders and smiled. âWell, now you have. Are you going to have some?â I asked, turning to Jerry.
âI . . . I . . . donât know quite what to say,â Jerry began. âI mean, I know you kids must have worked very hard on this meal, but I think you forgot somehow, Lana, that I donât care for marshmallows.
