Mr Poop peered at Dad. He came through the gate towards the door.

“But we’ve got you already, Mr Crow,” he said.

“No, it’s not me,” said Dad. “It’s this young’n here.”

And he stepped aside and showed Lizzie standing there.

“Aha!” said Mr Poop. “Isn’t she rather young for such a dangerous adventure?”

“I’ll look after her,” said Dad. “Birds is best in the world at looking after their little’ns.”

“Hmmmmm,” said Mr Poop.

Dad led him inside. Mr Poop narrowed his eyes and looked at Lizzie and clicked his tongue and shook his head.

“She’s strong,” said Dad. “She’s brave. She’s the bravest girl in the whole world. Everybody says so, don’t they, Lizzie?”

“Do they now?” said Mr Poop.

Lizzie shrugged. She thought about what Mr Mint had said about her, and the things that Auntie Doreen sometimes said, and the things her dad always said. And she thought of her mam, who’d told her she was brave, the very bravest of the brave.
