CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Temperance

This was surreal. Terrifying but surreal. I felt like I was in a fog. It finally felt like we were on the path to ending this. Sebastian had been behind everything since the beginning, even before I was born, pulling the strings to make Rick his puppet.

The man who approached Rick and Lily at the fundraiser? Hired by Sebastian to approach them, though he didn’t know it was so Sebastian could make police think that man had something to do with the kidnapping. And they did for a while.

The four men on the security team who turned on them while Rick was in the shower, knocked Lily out, and moved her through the gate at the back of the property? Recommended to Rick by Sebastian, and they were on his payroll. Those men returned to post after Lily was through the gate and in someone else’s hands, so it looked like no one was out of place. It was the perfect setup.

Sebastian tried to pin the church attack on Lily by planting misleading evidence, even the video evidence Javier hired someone to find, but he didn’t have all his facts straight. He never knew about the lilies she left at her kill sites, so he didn’t know to have his men do that. When I mentioned to Rick that the profile didn’t fit, he acted like it wasn’t a big deal, but he took it more seriously than I believed. It was why he hired Andre the PI to look further into Lily since he had government contacts Rick didn’t.

Everyone had gone with their own security detail to their individual apartments to pack the necessities, whatever they’d need for an extended stay. Packing my bag felt strange. Not because I wasn’t used to going from one place to another over the last few months but because of where we were headed.

The warehouse.

It had miles of land in any direction that Lily could watch with trail cams set up on trees as well as using the scope of her sniper rifle. She planned to take the night shift while Javier would take the day. Brett admitted he wasn’t the best with long-range shooting, but he was comfortable taking mid-shift since they all believed it was the least likely time for an attack.

Going back to where it all began felt strange to me. I couldn’t imagine how Lily felt. Hell, I couldn’t imagine how Rick might feel when he got there. I vividly remembered the blood stains on the floor. The awful shipping container with the torn-up cot where Lily was kept with Ava and me. And the corner where she was tortured that still held the exact instruments used to torture her.

It was all there. Every bit of it.

At first, I couldn’t figure out why the hell she’d choose it. Then, I realized it was because Sebastian would never think to look there.

I wasn’t sure Rick would be able to handle it. Not after I’d personally seen how he looked at Lily.
