Sitting in front of one of the library’s computers yet again, Art’s attention went back to Dr. Miles’ parents. He simply couldn’t shake the fact that there was a possible murderer among Gerald’s family members and associates. He needed to dive deeper to see if he could find clues about the real Dr. Miles—the young med student who could have possibly murdered his poor parents.

After Preston had neither passed nor completely failed the polygraph test, the Oklahoma City Police Department focused all their efforts on finding evidence or a witness who could put him at the crime scene that spring. First, they’d focused on his roommates and the lost spring break vacation Preston refused to admit he skipped out on. One of his roommates, an intern at St. Anthony’s Hospital, said he’d tried to call him multiple times that weekend, but he could never reach him. He’d also paged him multiple times but still never heard from him. When a local reporter asked him about this in a front-page article for the Daily Oklahoman, Preston claimed the roommate had lied about his whereabouts. He claimed he had gone to the beach with them, and he even mentioned a volleyball game they lost against a group of girls they met that day. So, who was telling the truth back then?

After that article came out, the OCPD finally found their smoking gun. There was a bloody footprint in the basement that matched one of Preston’s shoes exactly. It wasn’t enough to file charges at the time, so they dug even deeper. A huge break came to them when a witness stepped forward that put Preston at the scene of the crime only five minutes before they’d been murdered. A jogger who lived two blocks over came forward and met with a sketch artist who put together a drawing that looked pretty similar to Preston. This jogger even said the subject was wearing scrubs when he entered the home.

“Sounds like a guilty man to me,” Art whispered to himself. Yet that still didn’t mean Dr. Miles was their man. However, it gave them enough ammo to talk the prosecutor into filing charges, so they arrested Preston the next day in the middle of an immunology class. Art found a picture published in the newspaper that week that showed a twenty-something Dr. Milles being walked into the police station in handcuffs.

So, with the bloody footprint and the eyewitness account, the police thought they had their man. But the defense had a smoking gun the prosecution either tried to squelch or didn’t know about at all. Preston had been spotted on surveillance video at a motel in South Padre less than an hour before the time of his parents’ murders. His high-powered defense attorney got the case thrown out by a judge, and the soon-to-be Dr. Miles was exonerated in a press conference that month. Nobody ever uncovered why Preston hadn’t actually shown up at the beach house that spring, but the matter was considered resolved regardless.
