Chapter 20
âHome, Ms. Monroe?â Penny asked from behind the wheel of the limo.
Presley sat fuming in the back, her body resting snugly in the plush leather seat, her gaze set out the window. She stared fiercely at the traffic passing them on the street, offended by the people in all of the cars who knew where they wanted to go. They must. They were heading toward their chosen destinations with such singular dedication, while she couldnât put two thoughts together, let alone instruct her chauffeur where to drive.
The audacity of that man.
She was overcome with anger, reliving the way he had given her a nasty glare before storming away from the table, his ridiculous girlfriend on his heels, leaving her to make nice with the Count and Countess and leave the dinner meeting with at least a modicum of grace and civility.
What did he have to be angry about? She was the one being interrupted all of the time. She was the one who had to put up with his inability to finish a meeting. To finish a date. How many times had he done this now? So many she had lost count. This whole mess with him sent her reeling from seething anger all the way to pulsating insecurity.
Penny peered over her shoulder through the open glass partition, waiting for Presleyâs answer. Presley gave her a nod. Home it was. She had nowhere else to go this evening and even if she had her mood was shattered.
Penny turned her attention to pulling the sleek, black limo into traffic. Presleyâs gaze shifted back out the window just in time to see a man wave down a taxi on the other side of the street. A man that looked a lot like Hobie.
She squinted, trying to see through the tinted window as well as the streams of cars and pedestrians moving past. Yes, there he was again. It was definitely Hobie and he was ducking into a yellow taxi that had been decorated by its cabbie with pink and red fringe on the inside of the back window.
The glass partition behind Pennyâs head slid up as the limo pulled smoothly away from the curb. Presley was unable to contain her curiosity, she strained to find Hobieâs taxi in the stream of cars. There it was again. The unmistakable fringe. Her heart beat quickly, as if she was in the middle of a game and about to score the winning point. Suddenly Presley knew what she wanted to do.
âWait!â she called out just as Pennyâs chauffeur hat disappeared behind the gliding glass. Its upward motion stopped and started down again.
âYes?â Penny asked.
Presley pointed a manicured finger into the traffic and gave the instruction, âFollow that cab. The one with the fringe.â
As thrilling as it was to give the command, Presley was not expecting Penny to take it to heart so completely. Before Presley could brace herself in the back seat, her eager chauffeur stepped on the gas and turned sharply, cutting in front of several cars.
