Chapter Twelve

“I really appreciate this. Shirley used to do this all the time. I wasn’t sure you’d feel up to it.”

Maggie listened to Jake’s voice in the other room as she tied the huge white bow at her neck.

Ugh.

It was her first maternity suit, and the bow looked like something a two-year-old would wear.

The skirt was straight, hitting just above her knees, and the top flared out over her enlarged abdomen, falling midway down her thighs. It was navy blue, with white piping and large cloth-covered buttons.

“That’s what you hired me for,” Maggie said practically. “It’s part of my job.”

“Ah yes, your job.” She heard Jake chuckle. Oh, how she liked the sweet rich sound of his voice. “Of course.”

Maggie came out of the bedroom into the living room, where Jake stood. She sidestepped Kathryn and then leaned down to pet her. “That’s a good girl, Captain Kat. You’re doing just fine.”

The cat made an awful sound and then wound her way around Maggie’s legs before going into the kitchen toward her food.

Jake sneezed.

Maggie sighed. “You ought to go outside, where the cat won’t bother you.”

“That cat isn’t bothering me.”

Maggie shook her head disbelievingly. “Very well. The cat isn’t bothering you.”

After going into the kitchen, she pulled out two plates, bowls and silverware and set them on the table. Quickly she made oatmeal and toast.

“Let me help you, since you invited me to join you,” Jake said, coming in and pulling two glasses out of the cabinet.

He took them to the table.

“I’d like milk, please,” Maggie said, as he strode to the refrigerator.

Jake pulled open the door and looked inside. “I’ll have milk, too.”

Strolling back over to the table, he smiled. Maggie wondered what had changed in Jake. He’d been so solicitous to her lately, so gentle and caring.

Her mind drifted back to the bed races two weeks earlier and the look they had shared. Something had changed that day, tilted, throwing her world off-kilter.

Maggie couldn’t put her finger on it, but ever since then she’d seen Jake differently, wanted more than she should, desired what she knew she’d never be allowed.

Yet she knew Jake had changed, too. At the office he held himself a bit more distant, though he did spend more time talking to her coming and going from the house. He was also much more careful about coming into her house on errands now, sending Jennifer, instead.

She missed him dropping by. It had thrilled her this morning when he’d stopped by to pick her up a little early, and she’d found out he hadn’t had breakfast yet.

Mentally berating herself, she finished setting the table and took her seat.

Jake said a prayer and then Maggie opened her eyes and picked up her spoon.

Nervously, she watched Jake.

“Mmm, this is good.”

Though she’d wanted him to like it, she suddenly felt ridiculous. “It’s only oatmeal.”

She spooned sugar and butter into her oatmeal and mixed it up.

“But I don’t cook oatmeal.”

Maggie paused with the spoon halfway to her mouth. “You don’t cook oatmeal?”

Jake shook his head, taking another bite.
