Chapter 19
Blue skies stretched as far as the eyes could see and the sun beamed brightly up above when she set off earlier that day. One would have no reason to expect to be stranded in an abandoned barn with the rain pounding against the sides and the wind threatening to blow the wooden doors open. There Elizabeth stood, soaking wet from head to toe with a large overcoat draping her shouldersâMr. Darcyâs large overcoat, tailored from the finest wool she had ever felt against her skin. Her drenched muslin gown clinging to her body, she shivered in his arms. Elizabeth did not particularly care that someone else, seeking shelter from the downpour, might happen upon their cozy little haven.
Once again, I find myself in Mr. Darcyâs arms, and once again, I am precisely where I want to be.
She knew that were it not for the gentlemanâs coming along when he did, she might have been in grave danger of falling ill, which was not to say that she was completely free from danger. Just having Mr. Darcy there, holding her in his arms, eased her worries considerably.
The threat of being discovered and thereby being forced to wed was the least of her fears.

Mr. Darcy accepted her invitation without hesitation. Her face nuzzled against his chest. The comforting warmth of his body pressed against hers soothed Elizabeth like a cozy fire. If she had any cause at all to repine, it was that she was causing him to be wet too, just as wet as she was. Surely that would not do.
What would be the purpose of both of them risking falling ill? There was only one thing to do so far as Elizabeth was concerned. She needed to rid herself of her damp clothing. But how on earth was such a thing to be carried out?
Giving up his warmth was the last thing in the world she wanted. She needed not ponder the question too long as she felt his fingers fumbling with the laces at the back of her dress.
It is as though Mr. Darcy is reading my mind.
Tender moments later, her dripping wet dress pooled at her feet. A single layer of clothing separated them.
His!
Elizabeth bolted up in bed. The sharp flash of lightning and the crash of thunder had startled her, but surely such an inexplicable, albeit subconscious, imagining played its part. And while there was not a shadow of a doubt that her clothing was not wet, the same could not be said about a particular part of her body.
Such were the thoughts that
