Chapter Twenty-two

The SVR Safehouse, Avenue Condorcet

Dugny, Île-de-France

It was one of the rare cases when the Mossad operative agreed with his SVR counterpart. Vaniah’s face turned darker and darker with anger as he heard Jack’s update. “This is all rubbish,” he said more than once. “I don’t know the details, but we don’t operate on hunches.”

“She didn’t imply that,” Jack said. “Stahl claimed she was framed.”

“Convenient justification for the incompetent.” Vaniah waved a dismissive hand. He glanced at Bronia standing near the couches. “You’re not getting her the meeting with this businessman, whoever he is, right?”

Bronia shook her head. “Over my dead body.”

Vaniah grinned and looked at Jack. “It’s decided then.”

“What’s the decision?”

“We’ll set her up.”

“It’s not going to work.”

“We’ll make it work. Stahl wants a meeting; we’ll ‘give’ her one. We’ll tell her it’s being arranged for tomorrow morning.”

Jack shook his head. “She’ll see through it.”

“When it’s too late,” Bronia said. “When we have her in our grip.” She made a hand gesture, tightening her fist. “And we’ll close the trap around her.”

“What can I say to stop this madness?”

Vaniah leaned back in the couch. A smug look spread across his face. “Nothing, but you can make that call.”

“I’m having no part of this. It’s going to come and bite you all in the—”

Bronia cut him off. “Stahl trusts you. If Vaniah or I call, she’ll clue in that we’re setting her up. She won’t suspect it if it comes from you.”

Jack didn’t answer. He glanced at Riley standing next to him with his back to the wall. “We don’t operate like that. We don’t betray partners—”

“Partners?” Bronia said in a loud voice. “We are your partners, the SVR and Mossad.” She tipped her head toward the SVR operatives and Vaniah. “You don’t owe anything to this woman, Jack. She tore Khairallah from your hands, embarrassing you in front of everybody.” She waved her hand.

Jack’s face betrayed no emotions. “You know that’s not what happened, Bronia.” He cocked his head toward one of the SVR operatives, the driver. “He was there. He saw how it went down.”

“Whatever the excuses, Jack, this rests with you. Khairallah was in your hands, and now we don’t have him. Whichever way you try to spin this story, it doesn’t matter. Now, help us fix this mess…”

Jack thought about letting them have it, but then his mind went to his therapist. He drew in a long, deep breath and let it out. I can’t control what they say, but I can control what I do. I’m not going to let them get the best of me. He looked at Riley, who gave him a small headshake.

Jack threaded a hand through his hair and said, “Fine. I’ll make the call, but then, I’m washing my hands of this whole affair. This will become your mess, and you’ll have to clean it up.”

Bronia relaxed her shoulders. “Don’t worry about it. There will be no mess.”

“If you think so.”

Bronia nodded.

Jack shrugged and pulled out his phone. “I’ll tell her we agree, in principle.
