Chapter 12
âLawks,â whispered Charlie. âTheyâre big dogs, ainât they?â
I shook my head. âTheyâre not dogs, Charlie. Theyâre people.â
âEh?â
I backed away from the creature snuffling at me. I fumbled for the jar in my satchel, dipped my finger in and smeared the stuff on my muddy hands and cheeks.
âPeople? What do you mean, Hattie?â said Alice.
âDonât you remember what she said, that woman at The Nightingale? At Wolfern, she said, theyâre turning people into animals. But you wonât do that to us, Adam!â I said, with no idea where he was. âWeâll go back up there. We know Lady Hawkes. Weâll turn you in, and be on her side. Why does she want you, anyway? What have you done?â
âI donât know,â came his voice. âWho is Lady Hawkes?â
âThe Lady of the Kingâs Physick,â said Charlie. âThatâs who she is. Lady of the Kingâs Physick, and leader of the Mordant Sleepers.â Then he chuckled â I guessed one of the creatures had tickled him with its snout.
âWho are the Mordant Sleepers?â said Adam. âAnd whoâs turning people into animals? I donât know how to do that. I donât think itâs possible.â
âWell, youâre one of them, arenât you? With those weird eyes of yours, just like an animal.â
âHeâs just a boy, Harriet,â Alice said in my ear.
âThese are tamba wolves,â said Adam. âAnd Iâm a person, just like you.â
âAre you? Then tell us. Where were you born?â
âI donât know.â
âWho were your father and mother?â
âI donât know.â
âHow old are you?â
âI donât know.â
âYou donât know anything about yourself! So how do you know that they havenât done anything to you at the Priory? That they havenât made you⦠unnatural?â
âI can only tell you what I know. One morning, about three years ago, I woke up at Wolfern. It was sunny and warm. I was in the gatehouse. Geoffrey gave me a drinkâ¦â He swallowed a sob, and my chest tightened. ââ¦then the Prioress came in. They said Iâd be safe there. I donât remember anything before that, and nobody has ever told me anything. I donât think they know where I came from. Maybe the Prioress knows⦠maybe she knew.â
That horrible image flashed in my mind: the Prioress falling over the parapet.
âHarriet,â murmured Alice. âEverything back at the Priory. The burning, the screaming. Geoffrey and the Prioress. That was all her doing. Lady Hawkes did all that â she got the soldiers to destroy the place. We canât be on her side, can we?â
âAdam is wicked,â I muttered. âEvil, evilâ¦â
âWhy do you keep saying things like that? What does it mean? It doesnât sound like you. Heâs just a novice. Just a boy. He helped us to escape. He saved my life, Harriet. Donât you remember?â She hugged my arm. âWhatâs got into your flyn, Harriet?â
âWhy donât you ask Adam? He can see it, so he says.â
âWhen you attacked me, there was something flickering blood-red in your flyn,â said Adam. âItâs not normally there. And thereâs something still and dark, too, like a stain. That stain wasnât there when I came to Witherbey.
