LUNA ONE

Outside the prying eyes of the moonbase’s security cameras, Cyrus Kilgore and Juno Garrick huddled together in the shadowed recesses of a seldom-used stairwell. Kilgore’s gaze was nervous and wild, his nerves clearly frayed.

“We’ve been here long enough,” he said abruptly, his voice low and urgent. “I’m heading back to the outpost.”

“What? No way, man. That’s not the deal we made,” Garrick shifted uncomfortably, a frown creasing his brow. “Yeah, she’s batshit crazy, but the money—it’s beyond good. We’ll never have to work again if we just see this through and get home.”

Kilgore’s hand shot out, pressing firmly against Garrick’s chest, pinning him momentarily against the cold wall.

“Don’t you see? If you’ve got a pair of balls, this witch wants them for her goddamned experiments. She’s killing all the men. And she’ll do the same to us when she runs out of product.”

Garrick’s eyes narrowed, defiance flaring momentarily. “I’m not about to be a pussy about it. If she turns on us, we can handle her.”

With a grimace, Kilgore pushed harder, his other hand fishing out a small recording device. He played a secret recording—their voices were low, and between the static, the unmistakable tone of Fang taking orders was audible, but not from her expected employers.

“She’s not working for the Chinese like we thought, you stupid fuck,” Kilgore hissed, his voice laced with disgust and fear. “She’s working for something much worse.”

The recording ended with a chilling order that made Garrick’s blood run cold. Kilgore’s eyes locked onto Garrick’s, fierce and unrelenting.

“Now, we both leave at the next chance we have, or I’ll kill you in your sleep and leave your corpse for the witch to cut up.” Kilgore’s tone left no room for argument. “What’s it gonna be?”
