The cafeteria was quiet during breakfast. More students had disappeared overnight. I couldn’t imagine why they were being taken. Or why some of them were returned. It made absolutely no sense.

Professor Reynolds greeted us solemnly when we entered Qualitative Spellcraft. We were early enough that I was able to get my usual seat in the front of the class.

“Professor?” I asked, my hands twisting behind my back.

“What can I help you with?” He didn’t look up from arranging his notes on his desk.

“I was hoping we could put together a spell today,” I said hopefully.

His full attention was on me now. “What kind of spell did you have in mind?”

“There are three that I want to try to build. Could I have some guidance on which one would be easiest to start with?”

The professor made a ‘go on’ motion with his hand, and I took a breath, encouraged.

“I want to use a spell to find a person, like a magical GPS.”

He frowned slightly. “I’ve heard of spells like that, but most of them require physical touch to the person before they leave. I’m not sure how you’d be able to locate them without connecting with their energy beforehand.”

“I was afraid of that.” Even though I’d been expecting an answer like that, I was still disappointed.

“We haven’t given up on your friend,” Professor Reynolds said kindly. “Or any of the other students who have gone missing since. We’re preparing a spell to put on every doorway of the academy, so that if any student is coerced to leave without their permission, we will know about it, but it’s taking time to build.”

“That does sound complicated,” I said. “The next one I was thinking of was a time spell. I don’t know how much you talk to Professor Dunlop?”

The professor shrugged. “A normal amount?”

I chuckled. “Okay, well, last fall, I used a time spell on his Apollo’s mirror to see a location where a specific spell was used. I was able to see the backfiring of the spell that my grandfather used to try to sever his soul bond with Aiden’s grandmother.”

“That’s impressive. I did not know about that.” His eyebrows rose in surprise. “And you want to build a spell that would allow you to see into a specific person’s past?”

“That’s what I was hoping.” I crossed my fingers.

“We can take a look at the spell your grandfather built, see how much of it is applicable. But it will take a long time.” He patted my hand. “I’m sorry.”

I heaved a sigh. “I have one more. A spell to follow a flow of magic.”

“That’s possible. A flow of magic that is currently working?”

“Specifically the magic that is being drained from the dark forest,” I clarified.

“Excellent idea. And definitely possible. It shouldn’t take too long either. Start by comparing ‘sight’ spells and ‘movement’ spells. Don’t forget to account for physics.”

I wrinkled my nose. “Do I have to?”

The professor chuckled. “If you want it to work.”

“Ugh. Can I get help with my project?”

“I’ll assign group work in pairs.
