Every year, billions of dollars are spent lobbying for political change in Washington, DC. This money gives the largest lobbies a great deal of influence in politics. Politicians know that if they support a lobbying group, their campaign can receive money. If they oppose it, they may be subject to attack ads, and their rivals may see more funding.
One of the most important lobbying groups is the US Chamber of Commerce. Despite its name, it is not affiliated with the government in any way. It is a lobbying group that supports pro-business policies. In 2016, the US Chamber of Commerce reported that it spent $103,950,000 dollars on its lobbying efforts. According to the Center of Responsive Politics, $10 million was spent in support of Republican candidates, and just under $2 million was spent attacking Democratic and Republican candidates. No money was spent supporting Democratic candidates.
