ANGEL

Past

February 2

Angel could not focus. She tried to work after Detective Gully left, but she wasn’t getting anywhere. She’d sit down at her computer, stare at the screen for several minutes, then hop back up and pace.

What is happening out there? Her plan had seemed infallible hours ago, but now she was questioning it. Would the detective even find Mike?

As she paced, she tried not to look at her computer with each pass. She was wound too tightly to work, but work guilt had her wishing she could get something done. Then she heard the front door slam. It was ten minutes shy of ten o’clock.

“Angel!” Mike’s voice reverberated through the silent house, careening toward her, as angry and intense as a shotgun blast. “You’d better have a Goddamn fucking good reason for sending the cops after me!” His last few words were slurred. Had he been drinking? As a health psycho, he rarely drank. Food is fuel, he’d say. Alcohol, he’d sneer. You might as well drink gasoline.

For a moment, she was frozen in place, unsure if she should laugh or hide. Her plan had worked. Tyrone had found him, and he was not happy about it. She’d never heard this kind of anger from him before. A shiver ran up her spine. She didn’t know what to do.

Mike entered the room, his hands balled into fists. “There you are.”

His gaze met hers, paralyzing in its callousness. There was no love there, no kindness, no compassion.

“Why would you send the cops after me? What the fuck is your game?”

She was speechless, her mind numb. What was her game? It had been a game, he was right, but in that moment, it didn’t seem wise to admit it.

“What is wrong with you?” He took a slow, deliberate step toward her. He was still several feet away, but it was not enough space.

“Keep your voice down.” Angel finally forced herself to say something. “The girls are sleeping.”

“I don’t give a fuck about the girls.”

Heat shot through her. How could he say something like that? “They are your children.”

“They’re bitches, just like you.”

“Take. That. Back,” she said through clenched teeth.

“Why would you call the cops?”

“Where were you?”

His nostrils flared and he took another step closer. “Where’s the money?”

“Money?”

“Don’t play dumb. The joint account, fucktard. What did you do with the money?”

In all the excitement, Angel had completely forgotten about her lunch hour rendezvous with the bank. “I moved it. You have demonstrated that you are too irresponsible to be trusted with it.”

“This is about the boat.” He took another step closer.

“Uh, yeah.”

“You moved the money to get back at me.”

“Ding. Ding,” she mimicked ringing a bell. “We have a winner.”

“And you called the cops to punish me for leaving the girls at school.”

Angel leaned forward and lowered her voice. “Check. Mate.”

“Fucking cunt!” He dropped his shoulder and ran at her tackling her to the floor.

Her back hit the hardwood with a thump and a cry tore from her throat.

“Did that hurt? That’s just the beginning.
