Although Margaret liked George and approved of the marriage, she did not return to the United States for Helen’s wedding. She chose instead to travel through Germany. This may have been, in part, to avoid an encounter with J.J.; Margaret knew that he would be on hand to give the bride away, as Helen always had a very close relationship with her father. Margaret believed that Helen would understand her mother’s decision not to attend the wedding—surely Helen would know that Margaret was with her in spirit if not in person.
