Chapter Thirteen

Suva, Fiji

Sweltering, 90°F / 32°C

“It’s too hot for them to be stranded on a bus,” Tricky barked at Nik and the rest of the guys surrounding him. Their afternoon had been spent golfing and playing in the water in and out of air-conditioned rooms as they pleased. Smitty and Kyle brought the kiddos out and all the uncles had a fantastic time playing with Nicole, Patty and Junior. Nik specifically noticed Gage interacting with them and thought about him being a father one day. Gus did what Gus did…he stationed himself on a nice sun chair, keeping the endless cocktails coming. He wasn’t one that liked children, and he had confided in Nik early on that Laken had lost a baby before they were together and likely couldn’t have kids. He didn’t want her to go through that again and seemed fine with the decision.

Hollis was the only one missing, and Nik knew he had found some card tables in the resort that had been keeping him occupied and in the A/C. With the small fortune that Hollis had amassed in the years he was Director of the Mint, Nik figured he had earned the right to blow it on cards if he so chose.

“Not to cause a panic, but the ladies are still stuck,” Gus said as he came over to the edge of the water with his phone.

“Didn’t they say the resort was sending another bus or something?” Gage asked, holding on to Patty.

“Would you care to check on the bus situation, Gus?” Nik asked with little Nicole in her daddy’s arms.

“Yeah man, I’ll see what they have to say inside. It’s not like they can forget about a drove of women!” Gus wrapped a towel around his neck and sauntered off to find someone who worked at the resort and might be able to help.

“What do you think about having kids someday?” Nik asked Gage, who was still playing with Patty.

“Someday sounds good. I see you with little Nicole and love the sight. A tiny human has bewitched my cousin Nicklaus Eastwood, and I love every second of it.” Patty stole Gage’s sunglasses and they eased a little way away in the water. “Thinking you and Noey might have another one someday?”

“Maybe someday,” Nik said and headed in the other direction. Nicole needed more sunscreen, and they both needed some time in the shade as well as a nice cold glass of ice water.

Nik hoped Gus would come back with news on the ladies soon too.
