Date Night

Tonight was the night. We had set the date. I ordered flower arrangements for the centerpiece and reserved a table for two. The fancy restaurant was accommodating and the mood for the evening would be perfect.

Everything was just right.

I should bask in joy with a job well-done. My task was complete, and I was sure this was Baxter Lane’s exact fit. This called for a victory dance, but I didn’t want to celebrate because they knotted my stomach in a bunch. My nerves were in overdrive, and I knew the cause. But I had a job to do and nothing else mattered.

It was time for the next step.

Normally, when a potential love match had a date, I’d wait in the wings. I’d book a table for one and watch to see how the arrangement played out. If the date headed for disaster, I’d intervene and professionally call it quits, but if everything went well, I enjoyed my meal in peace. But nothing about this meeting of matches was tranquil.

Not for me, at least.

I was a basket case and a hot mess. I didn’t want to go, but this was my job and I had to see it through. Evelyn wasn’t an option because I couldn’t bring myself to ask. She was already up my ass and knew something was up. I didn’t need to prove her right.

So, I was going to break a rule and invite a man. A date for myself to help distract me from the inevitable and save me from myself. But deep down, I hoped Baxter Lane hated it just as much as I loathed him going out with Beverly.

I searched through the directory of potential men in the long list of contacts on my cell phone. It has been quite some time since I had to look for potential dates. Half of these gentlemen were taken, as far as I knew.

The dating scene had never been my thing. I loved doing it as a career, but not in my personal life. The thrill I got from the job was everything. The excitement in bringing two hearts together for a happy ever after made my heart happy. But going out with the opposite sex had never been my thing.

“David Bane...” I whispered to myself.

I remembered David as a fit man with blonde hair and emerald eyes. He was hot as heck, but totally lame. He was a successful bodybuilder and he was all about his career. Conversation with him was difficult because all he did was talk about himself. I don’t even remember why I kept him on my list of potentials.

“Brock Stevens...” I purred with remembrance.

Great in bed and a total heartthrob. Dark hair and hazel eyes with a mix of color. Brock was a doctor and knew his way around the anatomy. But he took things way too fast and became obsessive. Huge red flag.

Next...

“Garrett Grant...” I sighed with a tap on my chin.

I couldn’t quite place him until I remembered the amazing sex in his laboratory.
