The SUV snaked through the streets of D.C. Brody fidgeted in the back seat. He was a dithery mix of emotions. The anxiety of the episodes propped him up, releasing a low-grade drip of adrenaline. But it was gone. Talking to Saronda boosted him but spending time in an alternate reality ripped him apart. The only thing left was a twisted mess of self-pity and emptiness. And a fence he built to keep the outside from seeing in, but mostly to keep what’s inside from getting out.

Brody drummed his fingers on the armrest. He craved interaction. It happens when your soul is dying.

“So you may think this is the most bizarre thing that happened to me, being dragged away by the FBI.”

The two agents gave each other a glance.

Brody leaned back. “I mean, yesterday, we actually moved reality. The whole thing. We pulsed some computers and kept our reality from crashing head-on into another reality.”

“Mr. Markovich, I need to be very clear, you should only answer questions. Anything incriminating you say can be used against you.”

“Incriminating? But that’s only for people who have done something wrong. We actually saved the world from a lot of anguish. I should be celebrating.”

“It is highly recommended that you not talk. Wait until we are at the facility and then only answer the questions presented to you. You can get counsel if you wish.”

Brody leaned on the front seat. “Am I under suspicion for something? What’s this about?”

“We are not at liberty to say. You will be communicated with at the facility.”

Brody sat back. “Facility makes it sound like an interrogation or something.”

“Mr. Markovich, please, it is in your interest to stay silent.”
