Snow White had hoped that they would emerge from the mine entrance as if they’d never even made the journey down that long dark harrowing tunnel; she figured that a Fractured cave might force them into danger and then spit them right back out where they began. But instead, they were on the side of an unfamiliar mountain, surrounded by tall trees and heavy scrub. There was no waterfall, no river, no log to cross; just a rough deer trail zigzagging down and around the mountain, which was indeed much bigger than it seemed.

“Maybe this trail leads all the way around the outside, to the other side of the mountain, the part I know,” Snow White said. “If I can just find something familiar, we can set our course for the Queen’s castle.”

“So you’ve never been here before?” Hades asked.

Snow White shook her head. “I don’t think so. Everything’s changed so much that it’s hard to tell.”

“So you’ve never seen that beautiful glowing castle surrounded by clouds before? That’s not, you know, the place we’re trying to reach? I mean, how many castles does one world need, honestly?”

Hades was a little ahead on the trail, and Snow White hurried to see what he was pointing at. It wasn’t the Queen’s castle—Snow White knew that place quite well, and a dark and dangerous place it was indeed—but this new palace certainly was beautiful in its own right.

“Why, I’ve never seen that castle before in my life!” she said, stunned. “The Queen’s castle isn’t like that at all. It’s practically repulsive. But…well, one day I met a handsome prince. I always wondered where he’d come from, but I couldn’t exactly go looking for a prince on my own in my scullery clothes, could I? Not with the Queen’s huntsman stalking the forest. This castle looks like exactly the kind of place we might find the mysterious prince. Perhaps he can help us get our bearings.”

Tiana elbowed her in the ribs. “You wanna go see the handsome prince, huh? No complaints here.”

Annoyingly, Snow White couldn’t stop herself from blushing. “I think we need any help we can get right now. Maybe he can take us to the Queen’s castle and help us save my friends.”

“Mm-hmm.” Rapunzel elbowed her from the other side. “We definitely need to go check out that castle. For strategic reasons.”

Snow White was flustered as she led them down the trail and around the mountain, keeping her eyes pinned to the glowing castle on the horizon. It almost looked like it was nestled among the clouds, and she couldn’t help daydreaming about the handsome prince. She’d always longed to see him again, and even if her world was in danger, she wouldn’t mind running into him. Perhaps he would be willing to help fight the Fractured Magic infecting their land. Perhaps they could fight it together.

Although…this part of the world didn’t seem quite as Fractured as the mine and the dark forest. These trees stood tall and strong, the animals
