AFTER A FEW HOURS, I walked my friends to the door. It was getting late and I desperately needed a shower. Kim gave me a monstrous hug. I could hear and feel a few of my ribs breaking. How the hell is that little girl so strong? I wondered. Autumn and I said our goodbyes as well.

Greg gave me a fist bump, our usual goodbye, and wished me a good night. As I closed the door, I felt resistance on the other side. A hand appeared, pushing the door open. It was Greg. I opened the door wider and he leaned in and wrapped his arms around me.

The hug was a pleasant surprise. His cheeks felt soft against mine and had a sweet smell. It reminded me of Halloween night, after trick-or-treating with Dre and unloading all of our chocolate on the dining room table.

Greg whispered, “When I heard the news, I thought I’d never see you again.” I squeezed tighter. His heart raced against my chest. As he let go, he locked his eyes on mine and said, “If you ever need anything, I’ll always be here for you.” His eyes were comforting.

I placed my hand on his chest. “Thank you.”

As he walked away, he suddenly turned back.

“Always.”

My heart felt reassured as if for a moment, everything would be alright.
