Chapter 12

Donna

“Is it just you?” The man, Declan he’d said his name was, asked.

“Just the two of us….” I trailed off when I realized that Joseline was gone. I turned in a circle like a dopey dog chasing her tail. “She was here a minute ago.”

“I didn’t see anyone.” Declan offered me a soft smile.

“A little girl. She’s thirteen.” Why had Joseline run away? Had she needed to shift? Damn it, I should have been paying closer attention to her.

“She can’t have gone far,” Declan said in a soothing tone. “The hotel is right over the next rise. She probably went exploring. Let’s get you all checked in and then I can help you look for her.

His words… I wanted to protest, to tell him that Joseline needed me and I had to find her now. But something about the cadence of his voice lulled and compelled me forward, into his SUV.

The vehicle smelled of new car. The leather was butter soft under my hands. As though in a daze I watched Declan unload my bags and place them in the back of his SUV. My head turned toward the trees and I thought I saw a wolf standing there, watching me. Wait was that….

Declan slid behind the wheel and turned to face me. His every molecule commanded my attention. “Buckle your seatbelt, Donna.”

“Did I tell you my name?” I asked, even as my hands obeyed. I had to do what he said. It was important. I didn’t know why only that it was necessary.

“No, but I know your sister,” he said. “Process of elimination.”

“Everyone knows my sister.” I sighed. “Everyone but me.”

Now, why had I said that? I wasn’t the sort of person who opened up to random people she’d just met.

He shifted into drive and we drove away, leaving the wolf behind.

Declan had been right. His hotel sat atop the next rise. I felt a little loopy as he pulled up in front of the building and was grateful when he circled the car and led me into the hotel. It was beautiful. Limestone floors covered with oriental rugs. The check-in desk was stained mahogany. In the lobby, antique furnishings were artfully placed. Not so cluttered to make the space unusable. Oversized windows showed a view down over the lake. The overall vibe was warm and welcoming. I appreciated it after Storm Grove’s coldness. Instead of heading for guest services, he strode to the antique elevator with an honest-to-goddess elevator operator standing sentinel before it.

“My suite,” Declan said to the stranger in a brisk tone.

I wanted to correct him, to tell him that I wanted a cabin near the woods. But he turned to me, those dark eyes flickering with something that looked like flames, and said, “Hush.”

My lips pressed together.

Wrong. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I was screaming that this wasn’t right. I wasn’t the sort of woman who blindly took orders. I tried to catch the elevator operator’s attention, but the man kept his eyes on his work.
