Chapter 4

Days passed and Michelle and Amethyst stuck close together. Terry continued to be obnoxious; Michelle continued to ignore her. Michelle, shaken by her experience with the wolves, stayed in her cabin at night. She thought wistfully of the night sky and the labyrinth, wondering again if the things her mother had taught her about labyrinths was true.

The full moon came. The whole camp was going to stay up for stargazing. Each girl was assigned a buddy from her cabin. Amethyst and Michelle were assigned as buddies. They laid out their blankets on the edge of the main playing field, nestled between the other campers and the forest’s edge. They lay next to one another in silence as the chatter of girls and counselors rose to their left. The stars glowed. Michelle felt happier than she had since she’d arrived. She smiled. Amethyst grinned back.

“I see one of the dippers!” Amethyst said, pointing. “What do you see?”

Michelle allowed her gaze to wander the sky. There was Mars, shimmering brightly. There was the North Star, the Big Dipper, and the Little Dipper. “It’s not the right time of year to see them, but I love looking at the Pleiades and Orion in the winter,” Michelle murmured.

Amethyst looked over at Michelle. Michelle took a breath and spoke again.

“My mom taught me all the constellations when I was little. She loved being under the stars, especially when we went camping in the woods. I miss her.”

“I miss my mom, too. She’s the coolest. She taught me how to sew when I was young. Now I make a lot of my own clothes, like these pants.” Amethyst raised both her legs straight up in the air. Her pants were a patchwork of many different colors of cloth sewn together in a variety of stitch styles. A couple of the patches were all sequins. Michelle sat up and looked closer.

“Are you serious? They look like designer pants. You made these?”

“Yep.” She grinned.

Michelle whistled and laid down again. “You could really do something with a skill like that. You could be like one of those kids on YouTube who makes millions of dollars.”

“My parents won’t let me have a YouTube channel. They say I’m not old enough.” Amethyst looked over. “What do you want to do when you grow up?”

Michelle’s gaze softened till the stars blurred. “I don’t know.”

“What does your mom think you should do?”

“I don’t know.”

Amethyst turned her head. “You’ll figure it out. And she’ll be really proud of you.”

Michelle closed her eyes. Tears began to roll down her cheeks. She wiped her face with the back of her hand and turned to Amethyst.

“Want to see something?” Michelle asked.

Amethyst turned onto her side. “Only if it means breaking the rules.”

They exchanged conspiratorial grins, looked around as inconspicuously as they could, and crept away into the woods, the voices of campers and counselors fading behind them.

Terry snuck behind them, keeping to the shadows.
