THIS IS A GOOD DAY TO DIE
Khwaja Fillabyâs body crashed in front of the snow bank. He spit the snow from his mouth and twisted around to a sitting position. Snow stuck to his face, but he didnât bother brushing it off.
The clouds cast moving shadows across the valley spread out below him like a gigantic mural. âThis is a good place to die.â The arctic air turned his mournful whisper into a white wisp. âA good day to die. Merry Christmas, world. Merry Christmas, Dominique.â He clasped his hands together, closed his eyes and leaned back against the snow bank.
âYouâre not going to clutter up my landscape by dying up here, are you?â
Khwaja opened his eyes and blinked into the light. A tall man in a park ranger uniform stood in front of him, leaning on a stout, wooden staff. The sun shone directly behind the ranger, and the light flashed and faded as the man moved slightly one way and then the other. Khwaja shaded his eyes and said, âItâs a good day to die.â
âChristmas? Christmas Day is a good day to die? You jest.â
âNo, Iâm not. Iâm serious.â
âWell, Iâll have none of it. Why do you want to die today anyway? Why not tomorrow?â
âMight change my mind tomorrow.â
âChange your mind today. I hate having dead bodies all over my landscape.â
âWonât be bodies. Thereâll only be one dead body, mine.â
âHa! Thatâs what you know. Thereâs a woman farther up the trail doing the same thing.â
âWhat?â
âDying. Thatâs what youâre doing, isnât it?â
âYes, butââ.â
âBut! Thereâs no room for buts. Are you dying or not?â
âYes. Iâm dying.â
âAll right, then. Why? For some woman, I suppose?â
âNot just some woman, the greatest woman Iâve ever known. The most precious, wonderfulââ
âStop. I know all the rest. So what did this precious, wonderful woman do to you thatâs so terrible?â
âShe died. She got killed in an airplane crash. We had a fight before she left. I never had a chance to say I was wrong. That I was sorry. That I loved her.â
âShe isnât dead.â
âSheâs dead. The paper had her picture and everything.â
âSheâs not dead. Are you dead?â
âOf course Iâm not dead. Not yet, anyway.â
âThe paper said you were dead.â
âI was supposed to go on the flight with her. She was an airline stewardess.â
âShe didnât go.â
âShe had to go. That was her job.â
âShe didnât go. Did you go?â
âNo, I told you I didnât go.â
âRight, you didnât go. She didnât go.â
âListen, if youâre so smart, why didnât she go?â
âShe was upset about your fight. She went to find you.â
âYou donât know that.â
âYes, I do.â
âHow do you know that?â
âIâm an angel.â
âNo, youâre not. Youâre a park ranger.â
âIâm a very angelic park ranger.â
âYouâre getting me upset.â
âDominiqueâs upset too.â
âHey, how do you know her name?â
âBecause sheâs up the trail, dying. This is where you met, right?â
âYes. Howâd you know that?â
âShe told me. Of course, she may already be dead by now.â
âWhatâd you mean?â
âI told you. Sheâs dying up the trail. She thinks you died in the plane crash.â
âThis is not funny, Mister.
