“I bet he liked that.” Krystal wondered if the adventure took him down by the river.

“We both did,” Walt chuckled.

“Well, I can’t stay long, but I wanted to give you this.” Opening the folder, she pulled out a piece of paper.

Walt took the paper she held out and stared at it in silence. He looked up at Krystal.

“Did you do this?”

“Yeah, I’ve done others too,” she admitted, “but I wanted you to have this one. She watched as his eyes filled up. “I didn’t want to make you sad,” she said and patted his hand.

“Oh, you didn’t—you didn’t.” Grabbing a handkerchief out of his pocket, he wiped his nose. “You have a talent that is beyond words, young lady,” he said seriously. “You should show me some of your other work someday.”

“Thanks,” she said as she looked at her shoes. “Maybe I will bring in some of my drawings sometime.”

Walt stared at the portrait in his hand, of himself and Peety. “I can’t stop looking at it. You made a funny-looking old man look beautiful somehow…and my Peety, he’s my heart. It’s a precious gift from a precious girl.” He looked Krystal in the eyes and said, “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” She stood knowing she should get back. “Hey, Walt, would you mind telling me your story sometime? Maybe you can come by the new daycare next Saturday. I’ll be volunteering until close to lunchtime.”

“I think I can do that.” He gave her hand a squeeze and thanked her again.
